What's up w/ the fake boxers and hard as hell to learn bobs/weaves??6437

A gamer from North Carolina, USA says (18/Mar/2002):
This game has it's highs and lows. The highs are the graphics and the fact that the game is arcade fun, to a degree. That's about where the lows start. The computer based opponents have a ridiculous advantage over you in the create a boxer mode. When I added the stats up on the 4th opponent in the Heavyweight division which I've yet to beat on the Rookie level, it was +23 or something like that in his favor over all the stats combined. And what's up w/ only 21 realistic boxers?? Why couldn't they have included Dempsey, Marciano, Holmes, Moorer, Liston, Sugar Shane Mosely, Roy Jones Jr, George Foreman, Hector "Macho" Camacho...and other known boxers from the past/present? Instead they fill the roster w/ made up boxers?? That's a friggin Joke. EA could have done much better on the boxer lineup. And take out Butterbean for pete's sake. The control scheme in the outer circle is ok, but once you get inside it's near impossible to get the bobs and weaves to work right. And the computer seems to have an advantage in that, if you try to go toe to toe w/ the computer it just fights through your punches and punches you back, sometimes canceling your punches all out together. Doesn't work that way for the computer. You only are able to really start working him in once you've whittled his health down and have him on the ropes. This leaves little hope of knocking out the higher rated boxers. You'll have to try and win on punch count (which I also think either doesn't count enough landed for you, or counts too many landed for the computer, because the ratio always seems ridiculously in the favor of the computer, even on a win or a rare knockout of one of the lower made up ones) EA needs to correct these flaws for 2003. The Arcade gameplay is nice but the aggresiveness and cheapness of the comp needs to be toned down quite a bit. The multi ring concept is nice, but on the inner ring make the ducks/bobs/weaves more responsive, or have some sort of different control scheme that makes it easier to do these somehow, because the one now isn't responsive at all. Rarely will you get a bob/duck/weave...much less the one you want. Also I wouldn't mind having intros and more effects similarly added in, like maybe trash talking after the fight is over with (like Ali used to do) and beforehand in interviews or something of that nature. And in career mode maybe make it story like by adding in cut ins similar to what a real life boxer might go through...maybe he has to try and get a contract signed to fight a big time boxer and there's a few tune up fights in between to build hype, and in the mean time there are interviews w/ the boxers or something similar to the set up of the recent WWF wrestling games (If you've played through career mode on there you'll know what I'm talking about) And for cryin out loud it can't be that hard to fill the lineup w/ the above mentioned real boxers. Most if not all (except for Roy Jones..unless he was in 2001 which I never played) have been in one Knockout Kings or another. It'd be awesome if they could get Tyson but I don't see that happening (course they finally got Jordan in Live 2000 in his first basketball game in years for any company, so who knows!!) Those additions would make for a fantastic 2003 game!!

Be Patient!6258

DJB from Dallas TX USA says (10/Mar/2002):
From an initial glance, they have really prettied this one up.
Forget all you learned from KOK, KOK 2000, and KOK2001, it wont
help.Give yourself a few fights versus an absent second controller, and it WILL FINALLY SINK IN. Practice, practice, and with any luck, you'll only eat sixty or seventy jabs instead of
three hundred. Great facial expressions, and instant KO replays.
Would maybe argue button configuration, especially uppercut mod-
ifier, that needs to be a punch thrown quickly and without chang-
ing hand position too much. The bobbing and weaving aspect would
be much easier if you weren't prone to hold the xbox controller
at an angle. It's very fussy in regard to "gently" pushing
straight up or down, and very hard to incorporate body punches
from a forward lean. Again, body punches should be able to be
thrown tactically , not while trying to balance leaning forward
and getting rocked in the chin by every damn punch the opponent
throws. The new engine takes some getting used to, and it will
probably dissappoint the old KOK diehards, happily used to hold-
ing L1 and L2 while punching, but it certainly is more violent,
hey its boxing, thats the idea, and more fluid if you can master
the tomfoolery of "moving" and "moving".Lastly, i would like the
idea of punching yourself out, stamina wise, so in rounds 10-
15, your opponent isn't still throwing 150 crisp, quick punches
at you. Cmon. All complaints aside, though, and difficult engine
or no, it haunts my dreams, and i find the addiction factor very
high.

OVERALL REVIEW21735

Michael from Nashville says (19/Apr/2003):
EA Sports comes out with alot of great games. The graphics are awsome and I know they put in alot of effort and man hours and millions of dollars to produce such a game.
Overall I think the game is great in graphics, sound, music & enviroment. The ring options is a great add-in to the players choice of fight as well as to it's location IE. Vegas.
I also think EA was smart for adding in Middle weight and Light weights, however I do have one opinion for the next Knockout Kings. Add in a few more Heavyweights such as Tyson and others. I dont know if there was permission problems that caused EA sports not to add him in or not, but it would be nice to add a few more.
The career option isn't very good because of the fact that no matter how you distribute the boxers points he is still slow and gets a "whopping". Im sure you have to build up your fighting skills to be quicker, but there should be a gym to where you can practice before entering the ring.
Maybe add in some drama like pre fight weigh ins and interviews that will cause anger between the fighters so that come boxing time, the players are ready and pumped during the career season. Add veriety so that it's not the same story each time around.
The game is great and I play it for hours on end and two player is the best. So in turn I give it an 8

Where Are All The Boxers????8987

kyle y from Prince George, B.C, Canada says (13/Aug/2002):
overall the game is tight...the graphics are the best ive seen so far and i like how there are different rings to choose from...the create a player mode absolutely stinks, its probably the worst ive seen of any game period..the career mode isnt much better,i mean there isnt anything to it and whats with Ali being so much better than everyone else??...the main reason this game isnt as good as it could be is cuz there are no boxers where is Hasim Rahman,David Tua,John Ruiz and most of all Tyson?????...another thing they could have done is included more weight classes than just heavy middle and light...im feelin the soundtrack but there should be more to the intros..its a borderline button-masher because there is virtually no defense to this game and all ur thumb power goes to punching ur opponent..movement around the ring is very hard to get the hang of and should be made easier..it also takes wayyyy to long to execute an uppercut..there also could be more included outside the ring like weigh-ins and other promotions, but even with all these setbacks its still a very fun game to play and the best realistic one i have played..but like i said if EA includes ALOT MORE real boxers namely TYSON and takes out all the phonies then 2003 will be off da hook

Real Good, Coulda been Great6213

GENE from E. Providence RI, USA says (7/Mar/2002):
This game is tight. My only gripe with the gameplay is the controller set up. A soft touch of the left thumbstick lets you bob and weave while pushing harder makes your fighter move. When your getting punched in the mouth repeatedly it's hard to 'gently' press the control stick to lean away from a punch and you usually end up eatin' a bunch of jabs. The right thumbstick should have been used for bobbing and weaving (instead of some wack illegal backhand!)w/the left stick for fighter movement. It makes the game a little tougher to get used to, but once you do it can be as sim as you wanna get. That's what I like. No grabbing but that inspires you to work on moving around the ring. i recommend playing a 2 player game with no opponent to get over the learning curve, then lace up the gloves, grease up the face and be prepared to feel the blows delivered on the screen. If you are a true gamer who will take the half hour/40 mins to adjust to the controls-go buy it! If you are an impatient button masher-go play ready to rumble. KO KINGS 2002 will have ALL other boxing games screamin' "No mas!"

The worst game I have ever played6276

terry from minneapolis, Usa says (11/Mar/2002):
Terrible game. A complete button masher. There is absolutely no strategy involved. Ea Sports should be embarrassed to have released this awful game. There is not one realistic or redeeming quality about this game. Movement of your boxer is laughable. Sometimes one fighter will get completely turned around to the other fighter and you still cannot hit them. There is absolutely no defense unless you decide not to throw any punches. Body punching will get you knocked out because you will be hit with punch after punch while attempting to do it. Every boxer has the fastest multi-fire jab in the history of boxing no matter what their speed rating is. The fighter ratings are comical. Yet another thing that is terrible is that a fighter can (and will) throw 100-150 punches a round and not get tired or slow down. This is the worst boxing game I have ever played. Mike Tyson's punchout was a more realistic boxing simulation than this. If you are looking for a real boxing game, learn from my $50 mistake and do not buy this one. This is truly the worst boxing game I have ever played.

alot of offense absolutly nooooooo defense6430

Judson from Silver Creek,Ga says (17/Mar/2002):
The game in versus mode allows for you and your friends to 'duke'
it out, but i consider myself a true gamer and would like to see a more strategic approach to the career mode. You can create a boxer, but there are only 6 different looks to choose from. i also miss the old KO Kings with alot of 'real' boxers to choose from. The gameplay is all about offense the only way to not get hit is to run from your opponent. The idea of timing a block is cool but when your opponent is throwing a flury of jabs it is impossible to block them. Another downfall is there is no training mode, not to learn the game but during your career i like to actually work for better stats not just add points to my boxer. The graphics are good i like the fact EA didn't try to make the boxers look so realistic a focused more on other details like ring movement. i like the game, but i feel let down after waiting so long for the game to come out (like i did with Rainbow Six on Dreamcast). i wish EA would get back to the way they used to make games. i wish SEGA sports would try to make a boxing game.

The Game is OK6845

DAVID~~~~ from Indianapolis IN. says (8/Apr/2002):
The graphics are good but if anyone has noticed most of the knockout punches go right through the opponents body and smash through his head, come on, i didnt pay $300 for a game system that does the same thing as ps1. Over all the career mode sucks, and EA didnt put many boxers on then game. They dont put Roy jones on it because he isnt in any of the three wieght classes if anyone is wondreing. Roy in a light heavy wieght, But why the hell not put in Tyson, Forman, Bowe, Comocho jr. and sr., and maybe Thomas Hearns, none of these fighters have been in the game, but i was surprised they finally add Trinidad. They Bob and weaves are easy to learn and the punches are also. The tricky thing is putting them together. Come on EA I thought X-BOX was a higher quality system. Some games show it, not this one. I give you your props on the body and face graphics but Over all this game is a 5.

Best game on XBOX9727

Jon from Ashtabula, OH says (21/Sep/2002):
  xbox version:
Ok, I read some of the reviews below.. Yes, there should have been more fighters. But anyone complaining about the control system obviously hasn't taken time to master movement. Bobbing, ducking, weaving, body blows are all incredibly easy once you practice a little bit. In fact, that is the best part about the game - button mashing gets you nowhere! It actually takes skill and practice to get good at this game. I have a group of friends (we are all in our mid 20's) who now have weekend tournaments and even have a championship belt we fight for. Everyone in the group is awesome at the game, so it goes to prove that if you practice you will get better at the ring movement. Fighting the computer is no fun though (I can beat Ali (5 stars) with Malone (1 star) repeatedly in Pro mode. However, this game becomes addictive once you play against other skilled opponents!

All Great but comes down to a problem38719

Sam (Boy) from Pikmin world and on halo helping fight the Flood Covenant and Viceroys and evil pikmin dudes like grup dogs and stuff with pikmin says (31/Jan/2004):
Yah the graphics are great they rule all fun BUT The game is short! and they need to make ali better it took me 7 knock downs to k.o. Joe Frazer and 3 on ali whats up with that but this is a good game they should have a practice thing where you control your boxer gain like 5 stat points there then go after the next 3 rounds but you also get the exp. from the rounds and you can hit punching bags run in a gym that would be fun hopefully knockout kings 2004 is like that the game gets boring when you play it so much and beaten it so much and there aint enough save slots! because I have slots my bro's friends my 2 bro's my brothers have like 12 friends that play but this game rocks I play it so much I think this is the only boxing game ill ever like maybe 2004 will be better for now this is the only boxing game that is good that I encountered!

KnockoutKings stands better than any other boxing game yet...7259

Poop Fetish from Denton, Tx 76205 says (7/May/2002):
Knockout Kings 02 for the Xbox is a great game with great graphics and controlability. With the ability to pull endless realistic combos including jabs, cuts and hooks, along with a few sticks below the belt, this game may make competitive gamers have temporary lock thumb. However, sometimes the predictability of the boxer getting up from a knockdown... (maybe once every now and again Holyfield actually goes in the third knockdown of the fight instead of the eight every time)and the not including many worthy boxers, Tyson and Foreman just to name a couple may make Knockout Kings a dust collector after a couple months. It's still more fun than any other realistic boxing game available on the market. Good Job Xbox, keep it real!
(and... not to be a burden or a beggar, but you can feel free to make it more real if you wish)

why did EA sports ruch this game for?6535

Steve from Toronto, Canada says (22/Mar/2002):
This game is lacking in areas that were rushed. 2002 is Ok, thats it nothing more or less, the graphics are a 10 the gameplay needs work. There is no bob or weave so forget defence this game is all about offence. I think EA did not have a chance to have someone try the game with the controler first. I mean if you play this game for 30 minutes your hand will hurt especially in Career mode (major disappointment) the challanger has such an advantage that it's really frustrating. Fun game when playing with friends (they wont know what to do but bash buttons) EA should of made this game so much better at least worth the money. I have bought every Boxing game out there that I know of....next time I will try the game first before I buy 2003 version.

GOOD, BUT ONE MAJOR PROBLEM THAT PISSES ME OFF29786

GAME_LOVER from Chicago, Illinois says (12/Aug/2003):
OK let me start off by saying this is a very cool boxing game. The graphics and sounds are all good. Only a couple little things need to be changed such as more clothing options in career mode, more interesting storylines, more create a boxer options would totally help too. The MAJOR PROBLEM is that there are no intro's for the boxers before the fights. I'm not sure if this is how everyone's is but mines has no name introductions at the beginning of any match. This, although may not seem important really is. The match just starts all abruptly. Really weird, but other than the things I mentioned this game is really fun especially when playing with a friend. SO IS MY OPINION-SO IS MY RATING!

It wasn't what i expected6481

Tim from Baton Rouge, LA USA says (20/Mar/2002):
I was very excited when I got the game but when I played it I was left with a feeling that something was missing. I feel that EA could have done a better job on the graphics, not saying that they aren't good already. The commentators basically said the same things over and over, and were a little behind. When playing the game it seemed that just bashing buttons was the way to win, but after a few days of playing i learned what puches and combos worked and what didn't. I also found that putting the controller on high sensitivity made it easier to go to the body. So all in all its a ok game, the thing i liked most was the Ring girls.

EA in a rush!36928

Anthony from Fortwyane IN. U.S. says (13/Dec/2003):
It seems to me EA rushed the release of this game. It has great graphics but that dont make up for the short career mode and the fake boxers. Ali shouldnt be so hard to beat and they dont give u enough points to build your create-a-boxer to his ability which is lame. If i worked that hard to get there dont retire me before i finish my boxer. They got out cheap on royalties and made noname boxer which takes away from the reality when u play with friends everyone wants a boxer they know and ea didnt provide that in this game. It provides hours of fun but you have to be a skilled gamer to master combos and ring movment.

If it aint broke......7432

Don from Long Beach says (21/May/2002):
DON'T FIX IT! I love the graphics, the speed and the general gameplay, but they changed some of the core features that made the game the most realistic boxing game. I've only played the PS 2 version so I can only speak for it, but what happened to boxers punching themselves out? And now the ducking (and body blows) are very hard to accomplish at will, especially in the heat of battle. What happened to the combos? The way that this game has been remade can cause it to degenerate quickly into a button jagging fest where the quickest thumb with the most stamina (and my thumb is locked up as I type) wins.

Great game but some missing basics7447

Mike from miami, FL says (22/May/2002):
The game is great a lot of fun. Its one of those games you get hooked on and play for hours without realizing the time. The only thing i didnt like was that there were a lot of great boxers missing: Mike Tyson, Roy jones Jr, David Tua and many others. Not having tyson in this one is like having a basketball game without jordan. The other major thing is that it is very difficult to punch to the body and moving around the ring can get very tricky. And I feel they should have added more blood and sweat affects. And there also is no clinching

One of the better boxing games to be made..!!6863

Dino from Dallas says (9/Apr/2002):
This game is for the true boxing fan. If you are complaining about the movement of the boxer, that mean you have not mastered the game yet. It takes time to learn how to do everything percisely. I play on champion mode all the time now, and the only fighter I cannot beat is Ali ( Impossible!). But the game has many strong points that make it worth it's money. Only thing that it lacks is the depth of real fighters. EA could have done a better jog with that. But in the long run, it is the best games when it comes to a boxing simulator.

A need of more variety31943

NoFace from Las Vegas, US of A says (14/Sep/2003):
Okay, definitley better than mike tyson's heavyweight, but needed alot more options in the "create a character" mode. And the manager in the career mode gets on my every last nerve! I wish I could go toe-to-toe with that annoying 30's gangster wanna be.
The graphics are good, as well as the sound and the replays. I like how as the match goes on so does the size of the cuts on the boxers faces grow. Like other nice little details that you can find in the game.
Recomend rent before buy,.....if you buy.
