why did EA sports ruch this game for?6535

Steve from Toronto, Canada says (22/Mar/2002):
This game is lacking in areas that were rushed. 2002 is Ok, thats it nothing more or less, the graphics are a 10 the gameplay needs work. There is no bob or weave so forget defence this game is all about offence. I think EA did not have a chance to have someone try the game with the controler first. I mean if you play this game for 30 minutes your hand will hurt especially in Career mode (major disappointment) the challanger has such an advantage that it's really frustrating. Fun game when playing with friends (they wont know what to do but bash buttons) EA should of made this game so much better at least worth the money. I have bought every Boxing game out there that I know of....next time I will try the game first before I buy 2003 version.

It wasn't what i expected6481

Tim from Baton Rouge, LA USA says (20/Mar/2002):
I was very excited when I got the game but when I played it I was left with a feeling that something was missing. I feel that EA could have done a better job on the graphics, not saying that they aren't good already. The commentators basically said the same things over and over, and were a little behind. When playing the game it seemed that just bashing buttons was the way to win, but after a few days of playing i learned what puches and combos worked and what didn't. I also found that putting the controller on high sensitivity made it easier to go to the body. So all in all its a ok game, the thing i liked most was the Ring girls.

What's up w/ the fake boxers and hard as hell to learn bobs/weaves??6437

A gamer from North Carolina, USA says (18/Mar/2002):
This game has it's highs and lows. The highs are the graphics and the fact that the game is arcade fun, to a degree. That's about where the lows start. The computer based opponents have a ridiculous advantage over you in the create a boxer mode. When I added the stats up on the 4th opponent in the Heavyweight division which I've yet to beat on the Rookie level, it was +23 or something like that in his favor over all the stats combined. And what's up w/ only 21 realistic boxers?? Why couldn't they have included Dempsey, Marciano, Holmes, Moorer, Liston, Sugar Shane Mosely, Roy Jones Jr, George Foreman, Hector "Macho" Camacho...and other known boxers from the past/present? Instead they fill the roster w/ made up boxers?? That's a friggin Joke. EA could have done much better on the boxer lineup. And take out Butterbean for pete's sake. The control scheme in the outer circle is ok, but once you get inside it's near impossible to get the bobs and weaves to work right. And the computer seems to have an advantage in that, if you try to go toe to toe w/ the computer it just fights through your punches and punches you back, sometimes canceling your punches all out together. Doesn't work that way for the computer. You only are able to really start working him in once you've whittled his health down and have him on the ropes. This leaves little hope of knocking out the higher rated boxers. You'll have to try and win on punch count (which I also think either doesn't count enough landed for you, or counts too many landed for the computer, because the ratio always seems ridiculously in the favor of the computer, even on a win or a rare knockout of one of the lower made up ones) EA needs to correct these flaws for 2003. The Arcade gameplay is nice but the aggresiveness and cheapness of the comp needs to be toned down quite a bit. The multi ring concept is nice, but on the inner ring make the ducks/bobs/weaves more responsive, or have some sort of different control scheme that makes it easier to do these somehow, because the one now isn't responsive at all. Rarely will you get a bob/duck/weave...much less the one you want. Also I wouldn't mind having intros and more effects similarly added in, like maybe trash talking after the fight is over with (like Ali used to do) and beforehand in interviews or something of that nature. And in career mode maybe make it story like by adding in cut ins similar to what a real life boxer might go through...maybe he has to try and get a contract signed to fight a big time boxer and there's a few tune up fights in between to build hype, and in the mean time there are interviews w/ the boxers or something similar to the set up of the recent WWF wrestling games (If you've played through career mode on there you'll know what I'm talking about) And for cryin out loud it can't be that hard to fill the lineup w/ the above mentioned real boxers. Most if not all (except for Roy Jones..unless he was in 2001 which I never played) have been in one Knockout Kings or another. It'd be awesome if they could get Tyson but I don't see that happening (course they finally got Jordan in Live 2000 in his first basketball game in years for any company, so who knows!!) Those additions would make for a fantastic 2003 game!!

alot of offense absolutly nooooooo defense6430

Judson from Silver Creek,Ga says (17/Mar/2002):
The game in versus mode allows for you and your friends to 'duke'
it out, but i consider myself a true gamer and would like to see a more strategic approach to the career mode. You can create a boxer, but there are only 6 different looks to choose from. i also miss the old KO Kings with alot of 'real' boxers to choose from. The gameplay is all about offense the only way to not get hit is to run from your opponent. The idea of timing a block is cool but when your opponent is throwing a flury of jabs it is impossible to block them. Another downfall is there is no training mode, not to learn the game but during your career i like to actually work for better stats not just add points to my boxer. The graphics are good i like the fact EA didn't try to make the boxers look so realistic a focused more on other details like ring movement. i like the game, but i feel let down after waiting so long for the game to come out (like i did with Rainbow Six on Dreamcast). i wish EA would get back to the way they used to make games. i wish SEGA sports would try to make a boxing game.

this game is sweet6339

Andrew from Redwood city, California, USA says (14/Mar/2002):
this game is a very hard game witch in turn makes it fun. its not all about button mashing its more about timeing and combos. the graphics alone are worth buying the game but its the special effects that will make you love it. this game takes alot of skill or alot of time but you can also play quick games. the only thing that makes this just shy of a 10 star game is the create a player mode, it has alot of room for improvement...

The worst game I have ever played6276

terry from minneapolis, Usa says (11/Mar/2002):
Terrible game. A complete button masher. There is absolutely no strategy involved. Ea Sports should be embarrassed to have released this awful game. There is not one realistic or redeeming quality about this game. Movement of your boxer is laughable. Sometimes one fighter will get completely turned around to the other fighter and you still cannot hit them. There is absolutely no defense unless you decide not to throw any punches. Body punching will get you knocked out because you will be hit with punch after punch while attempting to do it. Every boxer has the fastest multi-fire jab in the history of boxing no matter what their speed rating is. The fighter ratings are comical. Yet another thing that is terrible is that a fighter can (and will) throw 100-150 punches a round and not get tired or slow down. This is the worst boxing game I have ever played. Mike Tyson's punchout was a more realistic boxing simulation than this. If you are looking for a real boxing game, learn from my $50 mistake and do not buy this one. This is truly the worst boxing game I have ever played.

EA is slacking off with their games i think Visual Concepts (from SEGA) should do a Boxing game.6250

RADA from PA says (10/Mar/2002):
The gameplay is pretty ok but i just thought the create a boxer feature sucked badly and needs some serious serious improvement. The Career mode is also ok but it should let you defend Your title once u win it even Against 2nd players. needed more knockout animations... i'd love to see Sega's Visual Concepts give Boxing a serious try maybe they'll teach EA how to really do a nice SIM.

Be Patient!6258

DJB from Dallas TX USA says (10/Mar/2002):
From an initial glance, they have really prettied this one up.
Forget all you learned from KOK, KOK 2000, and KOK2001, it wont
help.Give yourself a few fights versus an absent second controller, and it WILL FINALLY SINK IN. Practice, practice, and with any luck, you'll only eat sixty or seventy jabs instead of
three hundred. Great facial expressions, and instant KO replays.
Would maybe argue button configuration, especially uppercut mod-
ifier, that needs to be a punch thrown quickly and without chang-
ing hand position too much. The bobbing and weaving aspect would
be much easier if you weren't prone to hold the xbox controller
at an angle. It's very fussy in regard to "gently" pushing
straight up or down, and very hard to incorporate body punches
from a forward lean. Again, body punches should be able to be
thrown tactically , not while trying to balance leaning forward
and getting rocked in the chin by every damn punch the opponent
throws. The new engine takes some getting used to, and it will
probably dissappoint the old KOK diehards, happily used to hold-
ing L1 and L2 while punching, but it certainly is more violent,
hey its boxing, thats the idea, and more fluid if you can master
the tomfoolery of "moving" and "moving".Lastly, i would like the
idea of punching yourself out, stamina wise, so in rounds 10-
15, your opponent isn't still throwing 150 crisp, quick punches
at you. Cmon. All complaints aside, though, and difficult engine
or no, it haunts my dreams, and i find the addiction factor very
high.

Good graphics thats it!6248

A gamer from Chula Vista , CA says (9/Mar/2002):
This game freaken sucks. They add 2 to 3 new fighters, and get rid of all kinds of old fighters. The game play isnt realistic at all. The boxers never get tired even if you punch the whole fight. The old knockout kings games are way better, the only thang thats good about this game is the graphics and thats all.

good game6248

omni from bloomington, ind, Us says (8/Mar/2002):
I think that this game is one of the best to come out and the only thing wrong is that you don't have a training mode and you just have to learn by playing. All in all you and your friends will have a good time playing this and good luck see you at the tournament.

Real Good, Coulda been Great6213

GENE from E. Providence RI, USA says (7/Mar/2002):
This game is tight. My only gripe with the gameplay is the controller set up. A soft touch of the left thumbstick lets you bob and weave while pushing harder makes your fighter move. When your getting punched in the mouth repeatedly it's hard to 'gently' press the control stick to lean away from a punch and you usually end up eatin' a bunch of jabs. The right thumbstick should have been used for bobbing and weaving (instead of some wack illegal backhand!)w/the left stick for fighter movement. It makes the game a little tougher to get used to, but once you do it can be as sim as you wanna get. That's what I like. No grabbing but that inspires you to work on moving around the ring. i recommend playing a 2 player game with no opponent to get over the learning curve, then lace up the gloves, grease up the face and be prepared to feel the blows delivered on the screen. If you are a true gamer who will take the half hour/40 mins to adjust to the controls-go buy it! If you are an impatient button masher-go play ready to rumble. KO KINGS 2002 will have ALL other boxing games screamin' "No mas!"

Knockout Kings 2002-Not Realistic Anymore!6179

Primo from Oak Lawn, Illinois, USA says (6/Mar/2002):
The game is fun faster but I only wish it was more realitic like the previous years, Where every button has a different punch and there is no training which sucks but there is a tutorial (not much help.) I would like to learn my moves. I haven't tried versus mode yet but the only thing I hope is that we can use our created characters against our friends.
