A good game | | RICBRNR from Youngstown, Ohio says (11/Nov/2002): | Dead to rights is a sweet game. When I just got it, before even playing it I thought the hole dog thing was going to be a little hokey. Then after playing for a few minutes I realized how much I came to love and enjoy shadow's company. After the first couple levels I came across many, and I mean many snags in the game. Hard parts became easy as harder parts arrived during game play. The mini games were a nice addition to the game because you took a break from the usual sharrade of just shooting the crap out of everything in sight and you became more involved with the task at hand. Currently I am stuck on Fahook(is that his name?). Now I feel like a pie cause I do not even remember the bad guy I am trying to beat up. Its the guy on chapter 14, I am fighting him on the tail end of the plane. I know I have to fight him till his health level goes down then I have to shoot the bottle. And I am also aware you have to do this a few times to eventually break the bottle and ultimately finish him off at the end. Boy is this tough though. I have been stuck on this part for over a week now, but ya know what? Thats what a video game is all about. Remember original nintendo? Not 64, not super nintendo. I am talking the old-school 8-bit nintendo. How many of you beat any of the mario brothers in one week?? NONE OF YOU, thats how many. So why don't you all put your big boy/ big girl pants on and play the game how it should be. Codes are for people who like to cheat, and easy games are the games I feel like I wasted my money on cause then I have a game that I can beat easily, what fun is that? If you enjoy easy games, just go beat-up on your little brother or sister. You do not need a video game to easily beat something.
| So and So goes the way of Dead to Rights | | Match from Sacramento, California says (26/Sep/2002): | I work at a very well to do electronics store that shall remain nameless and well, when I first saw this game come into the loading bay I was quite estatic. I immediately purchased it and brought it home only to be astounded even more in my hyper-tensive state by the intro. But alas, I was in for quite a disapointment.
While the game holds a lot of promise in its story (ala Max Payne'ish if you will) it lacks terribly in its gameplay. I found it easier to just straff and duck. Snipe from a distance and then run up. There is no "bullet dodging" special manuevers that a lot of action heroes seem to perform. Nope, none at all. Just the run to the side and hope their aim is a little off.
As for the cheat codes, what fun is it to play the game over again if all you can really do is just play all of the levels that you really didn't find that imaginative in the first place? I feel that Namco could have had a wonderfully excellent game if: They had simply had the Yakuza style gun fights. You know the ones.
Where the hero wields akimbo pistols while rushing down an alley to meet his opponent. All the while the villian is firing madly away at our hero to no avail due to the fact that our hero can duck, slide, jump, summersault, and hurtle to cover the distance without relatively getting a scratch in the process. I guess I expected too much. But if they had taken a lesson from Zone of Enders (PS2 - Highly Recomended even for a short game) with the fighting style it would have been truely awesome.
As it stands now, if I had the choice to buy it or not, I would have gone with Amped.
| For All Those Little People Who Complain! | | James from Scarborough, Ontario says (8/Dec/2002): | This is no max payne. DTR puts max payne to shame, The ability to use ppl as human shields and disarm them are qualities that max payne could never have. I must say that the bullet time in MP was and is better than DTR's but still. MP gets so boring once you beat the first 2 times. When you firs play it "Yeah it's sooo $#< remove me > at !ing wicked, i'm buying it for sure" well it's a waste of money once you beat it. I was hoping that the difficulty setting in max payne (new york minute) was more of a challenge. The concept of you whiners claiming that this game sucks is an outrage. Don't complain about a game that you idiots can't beat! Just sit down and get through it. Once you start to listen to the story line and get used to the idea of whats going on then it will be alot better than max payne. I meen who are you kidding, can max use canisters and chuck them at ppl then blow them up? NO! Can Max use ppl as shields? NO! Can Max use a dog companion to take out that last bad guy when you have no ammo and are low on health? you know the answer! So for those of you who have never played it b4 i would recomend it. Of course max payne is a good game and all but get serious. DTR is far superior than what it is originally supposed to be. The game play is amazing, the sound quality is amazing, but the only problem with it is the camera. but it adjusts itself when playing. I have to give namco credit tho, the idea of jack to be a k-9 cop. is actually quite amusing. No one has ever done a game like that. So for all those ppl who look for challenges in games i would highly recomend this one!
| Not the best but close. | | Mike from Chicago, IL (if you dont know what country its in your dumb) says (5/Sep/2002): | If your experienced with all different kinds of games this game is alright and easy to understand. The camera angles only sucked during fist fights whenever it would change on me and I couldn't see only hear me getting my ass kicked. Other then that the camera choice is actually very useful. I agree on graphics i've seen better, and blood shed isn't that great PERFECT DARK showed better affects blood wise when you'd shoot them. But battling in this game has passed many others the gun fights are very realistic, SOUND?... I wouldn't be able to tell the difference... gameplay... it's easier to move around in this game then in others it can keep you interested but your Lifespan isn't always the best one minute you can have full life and the next you can feel your heart beating cause your so dead. Fun Factor yeah it's fun as long as your not cheated, people poppin up next to you (out of nowhere) while your trying to fight for your life gets annoying after the first few times and there were lots of other parts that I thought were completly crap. Originality, story line isn't realistic, but there was ALOT of clever things added into the game not just shoot, shoot you did get to do other things that required a technique better then pull the trigger. The only thing that I really hated about the game was AMMO after so many years of games like GOLDENEYE and PERFECT DARK naturally I run in shooting and shooting fast and when I only get 30 bullets it's very irritating
| Uhh, give it some time, it'll grow on you. | | Robert from Oakland, California, USA says (18/Sep/2002): | I just rented Dead to Rights. The game takes a little bit of getting used to at first. If you don't have the patience for spending a good 15 to 30 minutes becoming comfortable with the controls, then this game isn't for you. A direct comparison between Max Payne and DTR isn't what people should look for. I say this because although they do share similarities, they differ on so many levels. So on that note, I think fans of Max Payne should give DTR a try, but play it with an open mind. Personally, I find the bullet time on Max Payne to be a little more satisfying than the slow motion dive found in DTR. Sometimes when I'm diving in DTR and an enemy is right next to me, I still can't target or shoot him. DTR however, makes great use of its "wall" mode as well as the ability to crouch and pop behind objects. The addition of Shadow is also great especially when ur low on ammo. The minigames/subquests may throw you off a little, but its a nice change of pace from just straightforward shootouts. The hand to hand fighting is decent, but the barrage of enemies attacking all at once can be a little frustrating. The graphics are okay, although I would expect a little better especially with the specs found on the X-Box. Sound is great. All in all, rent it first, spend some time with it, you might learn to appreciate it more. Don't be thrown off by the frustration curve, its not really that hard.
| Fair game, but too steep of a learning curve | | Sutebe from Harrisburg, USA says (5/Jul/2003): | Max Payne was a perfect example of balanced difficulty. Dead to Rights is not. The first level is ridiculously easy, even for a training level. The second level, however, is horribly much more difficult than the first.
Enemies have infinite ammunition, while you only continue to run out of it. Even if you hit an enemy, it'll take at least as many bullets to kill him as it does to kill you.
Shadow is a great addition to the game and pretty much the best part of the game. It's entirely possible on some levels to rely completely on Shadow by hiding, targeting an enemy, and sicking Shadow on him.
The game has a lot of positives - original concept, fun when it's not hard-as-balls, and great graphics (aside from that cooky-legged stripper). The story ain't bad either.
But the game is much too difficult, regardless of what that liar claiming he beat the game on the first day says. Things are horribly balanced against you to the point where sometimes, it just isn't fun. And for the cheating folk: there are none. Enjoy.
Still, if you enjoy a (very hard) challenge and aren't prone to breaking your controller in frustration, the game has a lot to offer. If you're normal, though, it's best to stay away, or maybe buy the PS2 or GameCube versions if you own one of those systems - they're significantly easier. Those of us with just an X-Box should stick to the finely-toned Max Payne.
| you f'in babies... this game is awsome! | | terra from united states says (11/Dec/2002): | for starters... if you are whining and complaning that this game sucks than that means that you suck at video games and you should get the f out of the electronic section and stop playing them or play the easy ones for kids. This game is awsome, sure it takes a while to get and you may need help, but after a couple of tries you will be able to pass any level. The graphics are excelent (especially in the cut scenes, you control a dog to do your bidding, you play mad fun mini games, you get to disarm bombs, get out of a drowning tank, control a gun on a choper, play with flamethrowers, electricute a man, disarm them all in the coolest ways, sound is great, music is wonderful, you get to kick the living s*it out of a guy in the gas chamber, fight a fat mayor, escape from prison, and the list goes on. The game play is excellent and you get caught up in the game really easy and quickly if you pay attention because the corruption and twists are perfect (i played on it for an hour plus when i thought i was on it for 25 minutes. If you say it's a max payne rip off and you like max payne better or if you like other games better and have nothing better to do than b*tch and moan about this game than go play one of those games and leave the rest of the people who like this game alone. you all bore and anoy me anyway.
| Enjoyable...MOST of the time... | | Brandon from Minneapolis, MN says (29/Aug/2002): | I went home to play this game after buying it, and it started out great. The trailer pumped me up, the first level got the story going and everything. Hoever, come the third level, I got VERY frustrated. Dying several times in the game is unavoidable, and I spent an hour or so on the same damn spot on that level; it takes forever to learn the ropes, especially with hand-to-hand fighting (during which you will have several people throwing punches at you at once, from all directions-you WILL die many times here). Once you get the hang of things, the game is more enjoyable, but the bossess only dissapoint you again. Hell, in the Black Orchid, you must defeat a boss who is ALWAYS surrounded by at least three other thugs. No matter how many you take out, more come in. After spending ten minutes running around and throwing the occasional punch in, I finally got him down. Right after that, however, FOUR bosses all come in at once, armed with assault rifles, and they're ALL shooting at YOU. You are armed with a .45. I've been stuck there for three days, and keep thinking about cheating just to skip it. The game isn't without its fun, but must be played in installments, or frustration is guarenteed. Still, the storyline is good, a little better than Max Payne's (the two are, essentially, the same game),
| This one's better than Max Payne!!! | | Eric from Okemos Michigan says (8/Sep/2002): | This game was one of my top picks of E3 and let me tell you I was not dissapointed. In the game you play a cop Jack Slate who is framed for murder and will stop at nothing to clear his name. And there is also a lot of cool minigames such as disarming a bomb, picking a lock, and my personal favorite the stripping one. However there are some problems I had with the game one is the mediocre graphics that is not up to par with other Xbox games and the fact that you can't save where you want to. The game can get very tedious when you have to start over and over. The game does a good job of bringing you Max Payne style action but I wish you could save more. But still you can easily look past those thing and really get into this game. Another weak part of the game is the hand to hand fighting. Namco has simplified the control to just smashing the punch button over and over again. And there are some levels where you don't have a gun and you are just punching you way through it. This game will take you a long time to beat but after that you probably won't really play it anymore because it is so hard. But overall this game will keep you playing if you loves Max Payne you owe it to yourself to check this game out. I'm giving it a 9/10.
| DTR was a great game, but it could be more | | Brandon from LONG BEACH, CA USA says (6/Sep/2002): | I really like the game. It was overall really immersible and I got lost in the game for like 3 days straight. The graphics were a lot smoother than max payne and I thought that it was so awesome that none of the levels ever had to load. You never got that "LOADING" screen at all. Sure it took like 3 seconds from level to level but still it was awesome. One thing that I have come to know is that DTR was in development far before Max Payne was, so in theory Max Payne is the knock off of DTR. But that is just my opinion. The mini-games were cool, and I especially like the bomb disarment mini game, it made me feel like a real BOMB SQUAD leader. Also no one has mentioned the shoot em up level of being in the helicopter, that was unreal, the whole level is shooting the crap out of bad guys and trying to protect gloria. The only real problem I had about this game was the damn lock on mode. When I was surronded by guys it wouldn't always lock on to the closest guy I was facing, sometimes it would lock on to someone like 20ft away from me. That did get really frustrating. Hopefully that will be something the developers can look into when they are creating DTR 2. Other than that it was a pretty awesome game.
| Dead To Rights : A Max Payne Clone that leaves you wanting more...kind of... | | Joe King from Indianapolis, IN USA says (26/Aug/2002): | It is unfair to classify this game as simply a "Max Payne Clone." The gameplay is very straightforward and quite easy to master. There are also many innovative features that are unique and are very well executed in this genre of action game. The use of Shadow (the dog) adds some excitement and sometimes can be a lifesaver (especially if you are low on life or out of ammo!!). Graphically, DTR leaves something to be desired. Many levels become visually repetitive and seem hastily assembled. Lighting effects and shadowing could have added some spice to the level design, but the lack of such additions make the graphics seem flat.
The sound effects make up for what the graphics lack. The use of Dolby Digital Surround really draw the gamer into the game. Enemy chatter, gunshots, shells dropping, and the voice acting are very well done. The SFX and music create an atmosphere that set the tone for the level and add to the drama of the story.
Overall, I think Dead To Rights is a great game for fans of the Action/Shooter genre. The timing of its release in a summer of poor gaming choices make this a sure buy. If you are just looking for a good game to keep you happy until something great comes out, get this game!
| thank god I only rented it! | | Lisa from Carson, California says (18/Sep/2002): | If you have countless free hours and an endless amount of time to waste on this game, then by all means, go for it. I didn't like the fighting controls, he just didn't seem to do very many different combat moves, and some of those guys were very hard to beat. This dude doesn't have the skills I was hoping for. I put the cheat code in for all levels, but I didn't get past any of them, besides the first 2 which were fairly easy. After that, forget it! You'll be there for hours. I was also not impressed with the graphics, actually some parts reminded me of my ps1 games. Especially the stripper, she just looked odd! Not worth the money to buy it in my eyes, but as I've read, a lot of people seem to enjoy it. I can't understand for the life of me why, but that's just my opinion. I'll be happy when I see a game for xbox that resembles GTA3. Also, you can't carry any extra back up health and it seems they often put health where you didn't need it, and when you did need it, you couldn't go back and get it. Ammo? He didn't hold very much, often running empty. The only part I enjoyed was taking a hostage for a shield. But I was more than happy to return the game back to the rental store. And I don't miss it a bit!
| Jeez. | | ???? from The Place, Yeah says (10/Oct/2002): | This game is pure $#< remove me > at !. It tries to be Max Payne but it isn't. There are no bullet-time effects except for slow motion witch can be achieved with any game. This takes place in the US but unlike Max Payne, this was created by Japanese people, so you'll find yourself doing stupid "time your thumbs just right" activities, kung-fu combos, and absurd targeting systems. This game is 3rd person, but instead of having a standard behind-view, it has a crappy camera that flies wherever it feels like going, thus making enemies kill you with ease. And if there is a door, DON'T TURN YOUR BACK TO IT, an enemy will appear out of nowhere if you do. The graphics are pure crap, Dead to Rights like a high-res N64 game. The motuhs don't move with speech. The sound effects are bad, all shotguns sound the same, all pistols sound the same, all machine-weapons sound the same. The only thing different about weapons are the models and the damage. And if you look closely at the weapons, they have no barrels! And there are max payne liknesses. EXAMPLES: a guard shouts "Jesus, it is slate!" in max payne, a criminal shouts "Dammit! It's Payne!" I DO NOT WANT YOU TO BUY THIS GAME!!!!!!!!!!! IF YOU DO YOU ARE AN IDIOT, SO GO TO HELL!
| So Much Better Then Max Payne | | Digg Dogg from USA says (2/Sep/2002): | This game was one of the best games I have every played. The game was tottaly action packed and the graphics were not as good as Max Payne but as far a fun goes, Dead to Rights is so much better, the only thing besides graphics that I liked better about Max Payne is that Dead to Rights does not have as much guns. They only have about 7 guns in the game. The game reminds me alot of Max Payne so it is not that original. I like the features such as using enemys as body guards and the target lock on. I haven't beaten the game yet but this game tottaly makes you want to keep playing and playing till you fall asleep, lol. On the previews on televison I saw that you can drive a car in this game, I hope that is true because I was waiting for a game to come out on XBox where you can drive a car in a shooter game. Anyway, This game was one of the best games and I rate it a ten. If you have not played this game before, then dude you have not lived. If you liked Max Payne or if you like any shooter/rpg games then this is tottaly the game for you!!! Make sure you rent or buy this game. So get up and get it now!! What are you waiting for?
| Fun but monotonous | | james from NYC says (18/Sep/2002): | Yeah, the game is fun and all, but you end up essentially doing the same thing over and over again. It's just wave after wave of seemingly invisible baddies which you approach differently, but end up hitting the same series of buttons. (People who have played the game will recognize Y->, RT, AA, RT, AA, RT, AA, etc.) And don't even get me started on the hand-to-hand combat. The prison level almost made me drop the game then and there. It's way too early in the game to be spending an hour hitting the A and X buttons over and over again. After beating up the first 50 or so inmates, I had to take a caffiene break just to stay awake. And I certainly agree with the above review saying that the mini-games are annoying. The lock picking is quick, almost challenging and fits the moments that it is used, but the stripper's dance, the weight lifting, the arm wrestling, et al weren't challenging, just annoying. To anyone thinking of actually purchasing this game, I say go rent it and if you enjoy a good button-mashing fest, buy it. As for me, having been burned far too often, I am quite glad I rented.
| John Woo Meets the Kobayashi Maru | | TrueGrit from Frankfurt Germany says (15/Oct/2002): | How could they miss? John Woo shootouts, bullet time, human shields, a K9 companion that looks like it pisses gas, and a stripper to boot. Sadly, I don't think I've been this misled since someone spent a hundred million plus on state of the art graphics to somehow still dork up a Godzilla movie. How'd Namco screw up this sure-fire winner? Three ways: a) cornhole mini-games that break the pacing on the game and turn it into button-mashing agita b) sad, sad camera angles that you can count on screwing you when your health is about to fade, and c) proceeding levels of maddening kobayashi maru type shoot-outs. How I wish James Tiberius himself could have lectured Namco when this was still in front of a focus group, though, I suppose they know by now they porked a possible cult classic. For the non-cheat puritans out there, I respect the 400 times you're going to reset a scene to demonstrate your prowess. For the rest of us xbox mortals that pretend to have a life and don't mind shortcuts to zenful woo-ness may I humbly suggest spending the $50 on a stack of john woo films. You'll feel better.
| Bad Namco! Bad! | | Ryan Bennett from San Leandro, CA says (21/Sep/2002): | Mediocre at best. It sure is no Max Payne, although with a little more refinement it could have been tops. Neat features, acceptable graphics, and good sound execution went to waste on a semi-playable MP meets Time Crisis scenario. Ah, what potential. Alas, terrible camera positioning makes it nearly impossible to know what the hell is happening - RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU in many cases. This shortcoming nearly made me chuck the game out the window. The little "skill games" are tedious, and often one wrong move can mean that you have to tackle an extrordinaryily tough level all over again (yes, I know that's the point, but you go play it and tell me you didn't wish for a save anywhere feature). And how hard could it have been to include a difficulty setting? It would also be nice to be able to customize the controls just a little. Is it just me, or is the camera rotation control just plain 180 degrees WRONG? I have to say that I really overhyped this game in my mind, so I was bound to be disappointed, but there is no question that it could have been so much better. RENT FIRST!
| Challenging | | LilWebby from Minnetonka, Minnesota, Unites States says (14/Dec/2002): | The game test yours skills and stratagies, need to fast and smart. This game is not for begginers. Takes alot of time. Need to do many spots more then once to see how to make it through. Some spots u need to just run through others u need to take your time and snipe out everyone u can or wait for them to some to u. The graphics are alright and the voices are great. The varity of guns to choose from is good and the the dog "Shadow" is a great add to the game incase u are in trouble or have low ammo. Parts of the game u might need to look online to figure out how to get past expecially the bosses becuase each one has it's own weakness or way of beating them. Some bosses u attack others u wait til they attack u first. That's why this game tests u on how well u are able to change your ways of playing. If u do the same stratigy through the whole game u wont make it very far at all. Thats why i believe this a great game to own but it sucks that it is only one player, but two or more players for this game would be very hard to create.
| quit whining! | | A gamer from Colorado, USA says (24/Sep/2002): | This game was great. Improved on Max Payne in tons of ways...the mini games were a blast, who doesn't like 20 different types of games in one?!? As far as the camera angles, I'll admit it, they could use a litte work and sometimes it was extremely difficult to tell exactly what was going on and where you were being shot at from but for all of the guys who posted reviews saying that the game was too hard and you think it would be fun if there were more cheat codes, you guys are a disgrace to gamers everywhere. No true gamer wants to even put a cheat code in until he has conquered the whole game fairly. Granted the gameplay wasn't anywhere near the level of Halo or GTA3 it's still a blast to play, especially when you get to take hostages and then put a bullet in their head once you are finished using them as shields. That was quite possibly one of the coolest features I've ever seen in a game. For those of you who thought it was too hard...just keep tryin, once you get good enough it's a blast.
| A GTA..with no Bull | | A gamer says (4/Dec/2002): | you can't really compare the magnatude of this game to GTA But it is the closest thing to GTA that America has come out with. Like everyone before me..This game is for the people who will put weeks n mayb months into this game and can still play highschool basketball.. i look for gameplay and fun factor..i love hard games..cause i know that i can beat the game if i just work at it..most hard games like Max payne i can beat in 2 dayz..cause of my busy scedule... But D2R is a game where u need to be a Serious Gamer...haters only need to go get max payne and play that over n over...trying to snipe that stupid cable..over n over..while the serious ones beat d2r in less than a month..mayb even longer..Oringinality is good lifespan will only last till u beat the game ..do the same thing wit max payne..beat it and take it back..n get another game.. but this game..is the best since gta...even to ppl might not think it
