Uhh, give it some time, it'll grow on you. |
| Robert from Oakland, California, USA says (18/Sep/2002): |
I just rented Dead to Rights. The game takes a little bit of getting used to at first. If you don't have the patience for spending a good 15 to 30 minutes becoming comfortable with the controls, then this game isn't for you. A direct comparison between Max Payne and DTR isn't what people should look for. I say this because although they do share similarities, they differ on so many levels. So on that note, I think fans of Max Payne should give DTR a try, but play it with an open mind. Personally, I find the bullet time on Max Payne to be a little more satisfying than the slow motion dive found in DTR. Sometimes when I'm diving in DTR and an enemy is right next to me, I still can't target or shoot him. DTR however, makes great use of its "wall" mode as well as the ability to crouch and pop behind objects. The addition of Shadow is also great especially when ur low on ammo. The minigames/subquests may throw you off a little, but its a nice change of pace from just straightforward shootouts. The hand to hand fighting is decent, but the barrage of enemies attacking all at once can be a little frustrating. The graphics are okay, although I would expect a little better especially with the specs found on the X-Box. Sound is great. All in all, rent it first, spend some time with it, you might learn to appreciate it more. Don't be thrown off by the frustration curve, its not really that hard.

Fun but monotonous |
| james from NYC says (18/Sep/2002): |
Yeah, the game is fun and all, but you end up essentially doing the same thing over and over again. It's just wave after wave of seemingly invisible baddies which you approach differently, but end up hitting the same series of buttons. (People who have played the game will recognize Y->, RT, AA, RT, AA, RT, AA, etc.) And don't even get me started on the hand-to-hand combat. The prison level almost made me drop the game then and there. It's way too early in the game to be spending an hour hitting the A and X buttons over and over again. After beating up the first 50 or so inmates, I had to take a caffiene break just to stay awake. And I certainly agree with the above review saying that the mini-games are annoying. The lock picking is quick, almost challenging and fits the moments that it is used, but the stripper's dance, the weight lifting, the arm wrestling, et al weren't challenging, just annoying. To anyone thinking of actually purchasing this game, I say go rent it and if you enjoy a good button-mashing fest, buy it. As for me, having been burned far too often, I am quite glad I rented.

thank god I only rented it! |
| Lisa from Carson, California says (18/Sep/2002): |
If you have countless free hours and an endless amount of time to waste on this game, then by all means, go for it. I didn't like the fighting controls, he just didn't seem to do very many different combat moves, and some of those guys were very hard to beat. This dude doesn't have the skills I was hoping for. I put the cheat code in for all levels, but I didn't get past any of them, besides the first 2 which were fairly easy. After that, forget it! You'll be there for hours. I was also not impressed with the graphics, actually some parts reminded me of my ps1 games. Especially the stripper, she just looked odd! Not worth the money to buy it in my eyes, but as I've read, a lot of people seem to enjoy it. I can't understand for the life of me why, but that's just my opinion. I'll be happy when I see a game for xbox that resembles GTA3. Also, you can't carry any extra back up health and it seems they often put health where you didn't need it, and when you did need it, you couldn't go back and get it. Ammo? He didn't hold very much, often running empty. The only part I enjoyed was taking a hostage for a shield. But I was more than happy to return the game back to the rental store. And I don't miss it a bit!

not as good as max payne |
| jerry from wisconsin says (16/Sep/2002): |
I recently rented DTR, and it was cool for a little while, but this game is to freakin hard. dont get me wrong there are some good qualities to it like the slow motion, good graphics, and easy controls. But that don't matter when you cant get past the 2nd level i mean how can you kill unlimted bouncers when bullets hardly phase them (not to metion you run out of ammo way to fast) and then when you kill hem all another seemingly invinceable guy come out and your out of bullets. so I suggest if you like the style of it check out max payne first.

I want my money back!! |
| Angus from BigTown says (16/Sep/2002): |
I cant belive I wasted $50 on this game.. I usually rent everything before I buy it. But it looked like a Max Payne copy cat, so I figured I couldnt go wrong. Boy was i wrong. The only thing in this game the even resembles MP is the good cop gone bad story line. This game is full of mini games where you usually time hitting the buttions they show you on the screen, I just want to blow things up not waste hours apon hours on lame puzzles and fighting mob bosses that just wont die. I do like a good challange, but the game still has to keep up the action, this game just got old fast!!!! I wasted $50 bucks, please save your money, dont even bother renting this one...

One of the BEST games from any system..EVER! |
| DonJuan06970 from Shreveport(La) USA says (16/Sep/2002): |
This has to be one of the most challenging and diverse games there has ever been by far. Those who whine about the difficulty must not appriciate a true gaming experience. I hate games that i can finish in 3 hours. The different actions and jobs you must preform in this game make it all the better. My complaints: the auto targeting must not have a proximity variable in it because it sometimes targets enemies far off when you have one right in front of you. Plus the graphics could have been a little better. this game is for true gamers who enjoy a challenge!!

Worth The $50 |
| M. Roper from Palm Beach, FL says (14/Sep/2002): |
Let me start out by syng that this is one of the best games I've ever played on ANY system. God knows I've had them all. The graphics are amazing, the sound really kicks on a good surround sound system (JBL S312's fronts, S38ii rears, and S-Center, and 15" Velodyne subwoofer). Now, I will have to agree with some people that this can be a REALLY tough game. I was stuck on one level for over a week. That's what a game should be...... damn tuff from time to time. Those who whine about not being able to beat the game in under a week should stop. Cheat codes don't happen in real life and I'm glad to see that this game really doesn't have any to offer. That would just ruin it in the end.

The halo gamer need not apply! |
| Robert Smith from New York, NY says (13/Sep/2002): |
This game was ok for what it is, a silly game engineered for the simple players. I was not impressed with the layout of the game, the lack of control and the uneasy play. In the game competition world of head to head gaming.. this one would lose... given the complexity of a halo in the player movement, this game gives you silly camera angles instead... i like to support game makers and when i hear a good review i will blindly buy a game in support... well that was $50.00 USD not spent very well. Thanks and happy gaming!

5 month game |
| Bill from NY NY USA says (11/Sep/2002): |
It has great graphics, it has a lot of good things but it is not a game you would like to play. It is to hard I been playing for a week now and can't get off the 3 board it seems that they wanted to make a game that you can't beat. This would be really fun if i knew the code so i could never die or for all weapons, but with out those codes it is not worth 50 dollars and our time. You have to basically run around and shot people as fast as your finger can push and pull buttons, its one of those games where you have to have well defined thumbs. Max payne is very simaliar but with one exception i found the cheat codes on the internet, so therefore it is 10 times better, I mean don't you buy a video game to play it and beat it.

You have to get this game. |
| Tony from lompoc california,USA says (9/Sep/2002): |
I got this game five days ago and Iv'e loved every bit since that point.(note: ther camera views need some work.) But i thought Max pain was good well just think of Max Pain but 5x better accept for the graphics and selection of weapons. I think the sound is great and you can't forget about the gameplay either I think this is the came to buy right now. This games a masterpiece!

It Was The Most Kick-@$$ Game Ever!!! |
| Nova White Wolf from Unknown- says (8/Sep/2002): |
it was so cool, i played max pane that game sucked, but i have to say the bullet time was so cool on that, but dead to rights kicked its butt in all the rankings, it in my eyes it had very good graphics for the x-box version that is the PS2 could have had better but, my favorite parts are when you use shadow and the slow-motion jump and gunning, i really hated the part with the assains in the beauty parlor i hated the way you pump like a hundred bullets into them and thay dont die, but man it was sweet, i didnt like the camera angles very much, but the story makes up for anything that got lower then a ten. i rate it a 10!!!!
|
This one's better than Max Payne!!! |
| Eric from Okemos Michigan says (8/Sep/2002): |
This game was one of my top picks of E3 and let me tell you I was not dissapointed. In the game you play a cop Jack Slate who is framed for murder and will stop at nothing to clear his name. And there is also a lot of cool minigames such as disarming a bomb, picking a lock, and my personal favorite the stripping one. However there are some problems I had with the game one is the mediocre graphics that is not up to par with other Xbox games and the fact that you can't save where you want to. The game can get very tedious when you have to start over and over. The game does a good job of bringing you Max Payne style action but I wish you could save more. But still you can easily look past those thing and really get into this game. Another weak part of the game is the hand to hand fighting. Namco has simplified the control to just smashing the punch button over and over again. And there are some levels where you don't have a gun and you are just punching you way through it. This game will take you a long time to beat but after that you probably won't really play it anymore because it is so hard. But overall this game will keep you playing if you loves Max Payne you owe it to yourself to check this game out. I'm giving it a 9/10.

DTR was a great game, but it could be more |
| Brandon from LONG BEACH, CA USA says (6/Sep/2002): |
I really like the game. It was overall really immersible and I got lost in the game for like 3 days straight. The graphics were a lot smoother than max payne and I thought that it was so awesome that none of the levels ever had to load. You never got that "LOADING" screen at all. Sure it took like 3 seconds from level to level but still it was awesome. One thing that I have come to know is that DTR was in development far before Max Payne was, so in theory Max Payne is the knock off of DTR. But that is just my opinion. The mini-games were cool, and I especially like the bomb disarment mini game, it made me feel like a real BOMB SQUAD leader. Also no one has mentioned the shoot em up level of being in the helicopter, that was unreal, the whole level is shooting the crap out of bad guys and trying to protect gloria. The only real problem I had about this game was the damn lock on mode. When I was surronded by guys it wouldn't always lock on to the closest guy I was facing, sometimes it would lock on to someone like 20ft away from me. That did get really frustrating. Hopefully that will be something the developers can look into when they are creating DTR 2. Other than that it was a pretty awesome game.

Not the best but close. |
| Mike from Chicago, IL (if you dont know what country its in your dumb) says (5/Sep/2002): |
If your experienced with all different kinds of games this game is alright and easy to understand. The camera angles only sucked during fist fights whenever it would change on me and I couldn't see only hear me getting my ass kicked. Other then that the camera choice is actually very useful. I agree on graphics i've seen better, and blood shed isn't that great PERFECT DARK showed better affects blood wise when you'd shoot them. But battling in this game has passed many others the gun fights are very realistic, SOUND?... I wouldn't be able to tell the difference... gameplay... it's easier to move around in this game then in others it can keep you interested but your Lifespan isn't always the best one minute you can have full life and the next you can feel your heart beating cause your so dead. Fun Factor yeah it's fun as long as your not cheated, people poppin up next to you (out of nowhere) while your trying to fight for your life gets annoying after the first few times and there were lots of other parts that I thought were completly crap. Originality, story line isn't realistic, but there was ALOT of clever things added into the game not just shoot, shoot you did get to do other things that required a technique better then pull the trigger. The only thing that I really hated about the game was AMMO after so many years of games like GOLDENEYE and PERFECT DARK naturally I run in shooting and shooting fast and when I only get 30 bullets it's very irritating

This Game is HOOOOOOT!!!!!!!!! |
| Syncere from Goldsboro, NC says (4/Sep/2002): |
I Think the game is great. The aspect of mini-game puzzles and and action breaks it up so you never get bored. The human shield factor is original and fun to watch. I think this game is a definite buter for those of you who like action 3rd person shooters. the grafics could have been better, but isn't that true with all games? all in all it is hot' and kills max payne!
|
max payne is fun, this is not. |
| Joe Vegan from New Jersey says (4/Sep/2002): |
If you want to make a game thats fun to play, every level, and every scene shouldn't take twelve hours to get the hang of. these guys should have taken more notes on max payne, cause they try, but they just don't add up.
|
Yo the controls are difficult..... |
| muNkeENutz from dover usa says (4/Sep/2002): |
Changing weapons was the hardest and then trying to save the game was even harder....Every corner has a guy shooting at you.....This rox and you have a lil strategy and overall the graphics are awesome....It's definitly a buyer and worth every penny.... A game to play over and over....
|
Much potential... |
| Alan from Raleigh, NC says (2/Sep/2002): |
This game is pretty good, but after Halo I had much higher expectations. There's a couple of special moves and you can have your dog tear people's throats out (pretty useful actually), but the hand to hand combat is worthless. I hate games where you cannot save at your exact position too, they always send you back to the last checkpoint, which can be a pain. Also, for some reason they decided to have idiotic "puzzles" in which you perform various dexterity tests using the buttons... The variety of weapons is good but a lot of situations you just have to keep repeating to get it right. Also, I hate protecting the innocent, which you have to do in some situations. The innocent have a tendency to stand in front of enemies with shotguns... doh.

So Much Better Then Max Payne |
| Digg Dogg from USA says (2/Sep/2002): |
This game was one of the best games I have every played. The game was tottaly action packed and the graphics were not as good as Max Payne but as far a fun goes, Dead to Rights is so much better, the only thing besides graphics that I liked better about Max Payne is that Dead to Rights does not have as much guns. They only have about 7 guns in the game. The game reminds me alot of Max Payne so it is not that original. I like the features such as using enemys as body guards and the target lock on. I haven't beaten the game yet but this game tottaly makes you want to keep playing and playing till you fall asleep, lol. On the previews on televison I saw that you can drive a car in this game, I hope that is true because I was waiting for a game to come out on XBox where you can drive a car in a shooter game. Anyway, This game was one of the best games and I rate it a ten. If you have not played this game before, then dude you have not lived. If you liked Max Payne or if you like any shooter/rpg games then this is tottaly the game for you!!! Make sure you rent or buy this game. So get up and get it now!! What are you waiting for?

This game kicks ass!!! |
| Kandi from Abilene, TX/ Vacaville, CA USA says (1/Sep/2002): |
My boyfriend just bought this game last night and now I cant stay away from it. Max Payne was awesome but this goes beyond. I cant wait to get off work to go home and play it. The blood effects, blocking and dodging punches, and Shadow helped make this game alot more realistic. The camera views did really suck though when it came to walking around the jail cells and the graphics were okay.. I have seen better though.
