In my top 3 games of all time36876

Super Gaijin from Charlottetown, PEI says (12/Dec/2003):
It's not a perfect game, it has its flaws, but it's still an incredible game unless you've got an attention span of a gnat.

For those of you who are stupid and/or are bored by anything half-intellectual (like Mortal Kombat fans), then don't even bother touching this game. It's basically a Star Wars third-person RPG based pretty much on the D&D system, using feats and whatnot to improve your character specifically. What you do with your time has direct impact upon what happens in the plot and the whole control over your Dark side/light side aspect is quite nicely done. Help and innocent out and you gain light side points, do so much as even use your force powers for the wrong reason and you can garnish many dark side points.

Just like any other lame-ass out there, I decided "Hey, I wanna be on the dark side, it's cool!" at first. After a bit, though, I decided to stay on the light side because I realized the complete power of it. So just plan things out first, don't just jump in, lightsabers swinging at anything that moves.

Anyways, back to the actual game.

The ability to wield two lightsabers or use a double-ended lightsaber added a whole new dimension to the game. They didn't just throw those features in there and then didn't plan around it at all, they made pros and cons to each style of melee fighting.

The only real problem I found was that once you had enough jedis to make a party of 3, then you never had to switch characters ever again since they completely dwarf all other character classes (well, except for the occasional use of the droid).

Overall, the game was incredible. It started off just slowly enough to keep the player's interest but not just throwing you into being a full-fledged jedi with full powers. You feel your character becoming more and more powerful with each level you gain and your options become bigger and more plentiful.

Knights of the "bugged" republic31795

chrisdawg from fayettenam, NC-USA says (10/Sep/2003):
First, if you are a fan of "Star-Wars" by all means buy this game--you have waited your entire life for this. Now, for the rest of you who are just slight fans or not at all, rent first. This is not the best, second, third, or even fourth best game on the XBOX. The story line is well thought out--based on the Dark Horse comic series. The problems are in the mechanics of the game. The turn-based/real-time fights bored the crap out of me. The game freezes for some reasons depending on different upgrades you may aquire (for me it was whenever I would lay a mine). It is also a pain in my ass when I land on a planet with full understanding of what to do just to have the next six NPC (non-player characters) give me stupid side-quests, and they are stupid! The Pod-racing thing was also STUPID!!! Every magazine and fan of the game explains this as if its "Wipe-out" (playstation futuristic racing game for those who dont know). The premise is as follows--push the A button and hold to start the craft, then let go and press the A button again (which the screen will display for you). Last dodge the rocks and hit the arrows to boost your speed. Oh did I mention that you race alone and only in a straight line? OK enough of my ranting--the basics of the game are well done. The graphics are decent (I've seen much beter on the Dreamcast), the sounds and voice acting are well done. The control isnt really that important since you dont control much other than yourself running around. Nothing complicated. The game is good though, I had to bash it a little just so people would take notice that Star-Wars fans do not run the world!! There are much better games out there for every system--even the turbo grafix 16. Ouch, I know that hurt but its true. Splatterhouse rules!!

Mint but still room for improvment39201

CoolGamer from England, Wakefield says (20/Feb/2004):
I have played this game and completed it. It is great!!!!!!! It's challenging and it has a great storyline. The only thing I would like to see done in the Star Wars KOTOR 2 is a battle mode where you press a button to do a move and a button to block when the game enters battle mode. I especialy like how the story has surprises like, I thought you would have to save Bastila when she was kidnapped by Darth Malak or she would not turn to the dark side and escape but in the nd she turns to the dark side.Customising your own lightsaber is great also. I can't choose which is better, double blade or twin held lightsabers. I luv the cast you get, my personal favourite is Bastila. Oh yeh and before I forget, if you have just got the game, when you become a apprentise you have get rid of the dark side in the grounds. Don't kill Juhani, persist in getting her to turn back and you will be rewarded by getting her in your party. She aint as good as Bastila but she can pack a punch. If you have read this far you have liked my review so for you few who can be bothered to read reviews heres a cheat for you. It's called Jedi levels beyond 20. WHen you are on Taris keep your main character on level two, any further and the cheat cannot be done. Keep it like that until you get your lightsaber and then level up all the levels you should of done as a scout or soldier or whatever and use them as a jedi. You will twenty level ups as a jedi and a free whatever you got on Taris. Happy playing and if you are reading this and havent yet got the game but are looking at reviews to choose on Soul Calibur 2 or Star Wars well I know what I'd choose, Happy Gaming!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dude42199

Jacob from NC,USA says (10/Aug/2004):
This game is the best out there. if anyone gave it below a 10, they are crazy. It has a great story line. It has the best replay value I have ever seen. This is a game where a 10 just dosen't cover it.The force powers are the best. Your feats are just as good. And you NCPs are timeless. Star Wars Knights of the Old Repunlic will rock your world and then some. It is worth the money. And you will spend sleepless nights playing it. There are puzzles, not to hard, not to easy. The sound when the gameplay gose into combat is the best sound ever. There are suprizes, love(yes love, but is still a great game)and fighting to rule over the galxy or save it from evil. Each time you play it you will see something you missed or didn't notice. The combat level: easy, normal, or hard can be changed through out the game. It sounds like anthor star wars game, but is in a diff. ballpark. When you first turn on the game a pick your charcter, male or female, you can pick there face and abilitys. The first time you play it will give a brand new deffination to the words Role Playing Game. The graphics in this game are to be giving a gold metal. The cut-senes are the coolest ever, and the bad guys you face have there own fighting style. The great part of this game is that you can have up to nine NPC Chactors, but you can only use two of them at a time, you and up to two NPCs can be with you. All with a special talent and coversations that you can have with them. No matter how you look at Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic is the best game out there.

A final Fantasy this is not, this is so much better!28707

Gabriel Cortez from Cincinnati, Ohio says (27/Jul/2003):
This game will controll your life it will take your soul! First of let it be known yes this game does have it's faults. This game starts of kinda slow with pretty much nothing really great at first. Give it an hour of play first and then you will be hooked! And once you save the jedi bastilla you will not want to stop playing. You then proceed to become a jedi and start hunting for the star maps. Becoming a jedi is great!Building your lightsaber is great! I only wish you could choose your own design for your blade giving it a more personal feel to it. Be prepaired there is a lot of walking and they should have made it were you can buy a speeder to drive around in but oh well. Once you become a Jedi just make sure to choose force run,Then you can just speed around every where. The game allso tends to freeze here and there just save a lot and you will be fine not to mention if it does freeze just hit the disk eject button and most times it will start of were you were no lost stuff or anything(THE FREEZES USALLY HAPPEN DURING THE GAMES MOVIES NOT DURING GAMEPLAY)
And for those of you who do not like role playing games or starwars, four of my friend said they did not really want to try it but I brought it up for they can play hellped them out a bit and within an hour every one of them was like OH MY GOD THIS GAME ROCKS! And these are non role playing people.
So have fun playing and tell you girlfriend your leaving town becose you will be forever trapped within this game.
One last thing beware OF THE DARK SIDE STRONG IT IS!

excellent game, but where's the excitement?32790

DaHype from Amsterdam, Holland says (1/Oct/2003):
The game rules, no doubt about it...HOWEVER:
Yes I know it's an RPG, yes I know most RPG's use a turnbased fighting system... Don't get me wrong, a turnbased fighting system is okay.....in a game such as Final Fantasy where you have your magic spells, summon demons etc.. However it's NOT okay in a game that's set in the star wars universe. where you are a bad ass jediknight wielding lightsabers.
Lightsabers as we all know and love them are very intense flashy weapons. It would have been an amazing rush if you were in realtime control of the fighting but this system (eventhough it's well implemented) doesn't provide that rush of adrenaline when you're in combat. NO frantic wielding of your saber, NO lastsecond blocks followed by a well aimed swing to take your opponent down, leaving you with that heartpounding feeling of "wow that was intense!!" There's just no real excitement in them!!
Instead, fights feel like you're in the backseat of a Ferrari...giving orders to the driver to turn right...turn left..brake...hit the gas etc etc.., I don't wanna be in the backseat of a Ferrari! I wanna DRIVE the bloody thing myself, I wanna be in DIRECT control!!
Does this mean that the game sucks? Well..no, make no mistake, the game is good, very good, good story, lots of freedom in how you want to play the game. That right there is what makes it good, the fact that you really have a sense of freedom to go and act how you like. But as for the fighting....should have, would have, could have..

Star Wars meets D&D, An unbeatable tagteam!30565

Hazard Decourt from Robertsdale, AL, USA says (20/Aug/2003):
The game is very engaging. If you like Baldurs Gate I and II, or even Icewind Dale I and II, you will LOVE Star Wars: KOTOR! The character creation system is fantastic, you may be limited to certain faces, but nobodies perfect. You get to see a new history of Star Wars 4000 years before the Star Wars that we know and love today. You have download content for all you Xbox LIVE users to get your hands on for updates (read instructions for more info). You even have ambidexterity (aka two weapon fighting) which is starting to develop in most of the Bioware games today. If you ever wanted to take your rping to a futuristic atmosphere, plus relive a past time in a 3rd Edition Dungeons and Dragons style of playing, then this is the game for you. The chapters are not as long as planned and the max level is 20, but this is a success for Bioware! You have a swell freedom of which side you want to be on and you have workbenches to tone certain equipment up with addons at. If you hate Star Wars, you may still like the game if you are interested in Dungeons and Dragons. It has a reinforced stat system so you can't make those cheap characters with the 1 charisma and 20 strength along with 20 dexterity, and 20 constitution and hardly any wisdom or intelligence (Cheap method in D&D sessions for survival). The classes are passable too, plus they have tests to attain the Jedi status. 10 *s all the way!!!

The Best There Ever Will Be36894

LoB_Jedi3 from Medford, New Jersey says (12/Dec/2003):
This game totally blew my mind. I played this game for many days straight stopping only for food and bathroom. I have beaten the game on light side, but the dark side is harder. Most advantages is, in the unknown planet, choosing the dark side means killing 2 Jedis, Mission, and Big Z. So, you are stuck with Bastila, Canderous, and 2 droids. The graphics were some of the best i have seen, but once in a while, it would freeze up on me. I love RPGs, but i usually dont play the ones on XBox. I am a huge XBox and Star Wars fan and have been since the earlier years of Vader and Skywalker. If this is your first time playing, then you will get caught in some kind of trap. I finally beat the game in 24 hours. It seems a while, but it goes by quickly. The fun factor is very high, but if you play this game for many days for many hours, like i did, you will lose interest in it for a couple of days. i find this period a good time for R&R. My advice: i was psyched bout being dark side, but as i've said, you lose a few critical characters. sometimes u need the good characters to win. Also, i am a boy, but the 2 times i have played the game, i have been a girl on the light side. granted, i may be a little conceited when i am a guy in the game, thinking im all bad. i guess, and this sounds weird, i think differently when i am a woman in the guy. thanks for reading, and may the force be with you!

Almost perfect29677

The Plague from Woodbrige VA 22191 says (10/Aug/2003):
I am a really tough gamer to please. So far the Xbox has featured stinker after stinker with the notable exception of Halo. If you do not own an Xbox because of Halo, or the coming Halo 2, buy one for KOTOR. The story is deep, the choices you make have an actual effect, and guess what.... you don't have to read, well... much and to top that off the voice acting is surprisingly good. The combat is a combination of real time and turn based that works better than you would think. The pause button is a perfect addition that pulls it all together. Pause the game load up all of your party with commands then unpause and watch it all unfold. Well done, but the force has some balance. The graphics while good are not perfect.. some of the characters are a little block like, I have logged 70+ hours of gameplay and have run into a few problems, 2 times the game froze between loads and once the screen went black. The black screen only lasted until I went into the next area and I could still access the menus to guide myself with the map. The freeze of course required a restart and a loss of data after my last save. The good however totally outweighs th bad this game has everything... choices, combat, puzzles, story, everything a good RPG needs in order to be a great RPG. Renting first is never a bad choice, but in this case you would not go wrong with buying it unplayed.

Star Wars Rules!29838

Gabe from NC, USA says (12/Aug/2003):
Having played this game it was awesome right from the start. The game gave you time to get use to the controls and even had it all laid out for you if you needed "special" attention. The only problem I had with the game were a couple small things. First, I accidentally chose to go back to visit the Jedi only to find out that I get captured and the planet is destroyed. Oops... the game froze like a champ after you escape because you have no planet to go back too. Second, once you are on the path of the dark side, (Like before I ever left the first World) You have to go through the darn thing playing off like you are a good guy. I say "heck with that", if you want to be bad, be bad and just kick some tail and leave the rest up to someone else. But I can live... the biggest thing that just made me mad was the final level cap. No matter what you do, who you kill, how much XP you gain you are done once you hit level 20. That sucks! However, I would soooo love to see this continued in a second game where you can just pick up from where you left off. Being Light or Dark and just roll with it.
OH... and what's the deal with finally getting Revan's Armor right at the last possible moment and not being able to really use it save for like 15 minutes of the darn last epic battles??? That's just Wrong! Otherwise this game totally hits my 'A' list.

This game is fantastic, 10 stars!!!28037

Kakarot from Florida, USA says (18/Jul/2003):
I recieved my preorder on July 17 2003 at 6:30pm. It is now 9am and I have yet to goto sleep. It has been a long time since a game has drawn me into an all nighter. On a downside, I had to shower and come to work =[ but will resume play as soon as I arrive home this evening. the graphics are stunning and the game play has a "Neverwinter Nights" gone Star Wars feel to it. If you are not and RPG fan then this game is not for you. But should you like RPG's, Star Wars, or both then this fantastic story will suck you in and keep you captivated for hours. The Musical Score is stunning as are the surround sound effects. Bioware has out done themselves this time with what in my opinion is the best console based RPG to date. Character creation is also reminiscent of "Neverwinter Nights" you have the option to use a pregenerated charachter or you can take a little extra time and choose you own abilities, feats, skills, etc. When walking through the cities you can stop and talk with anyone encountered. The only drawback I see in the game is that you can not attack just anyone, only the preselected encouters and a few random encounters. Despite this I recomend this game highly to any RPG fan.

Sucks my balls28037

John from Melbourne, Australia says (11/Aug/2004):
I recently, no wait scratch that, I gave a review on this game over a year ago and still have to endure emails from you idiodic star wars geeks. I have no problem with those of you who like star wars, as do I, however if emailing me with your beliefs of how wrong I was makes you feel better, get a life. The graphics are sub par, the story line was terrible, fight scenes cut every corner to just make it pass as decent and even when you think it couldnt get worse, they give you no rewards at all for defeating the game. Again, after a year I still have to endure stupid emails from people who loved this game so I figured I would give another post a YEAR LATER and make you suck on my other nut. If you seek a real game, buy Doom 3, or if you want the same consol, wait for Fable. Those are real games boys, not this garbage you rave about. Go ahead, rate my review as terrible, see if I care. If you even consider buying this game over a year after its released you should be hung with a xbox controller and even worse, if you even consider emailing me again over this pathetic game, I will have Jaba the Hut sit on you.

This is one of my favorite Xbox games.34164

Michael from Maryville, TN, USA says (26/Oct/2003):
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is one of the best games I have ever played for the Xbox. To start off, the game has amzing graphics and play control. One of my favorite things about this game is the fact you get to use a lightsaber, this is where most other Star Wars games failed to amaze me. The game features a ton of side quests, and has a vast playing feild, ranging from Tatooine to Mannan. Another thing that is great about the game is the fact that you can kill your own party members, and they each have their own interesting stories. They're is only one bad thing about this game, it is much too short. After the first planet everything starts to move too fast. After I left Taris, I completed three planets in one day. I wish the game would come out for more systems, like Gamecube. I would definitely recommend this game to any star wars fan, no matter what the age, although it will be a bit confusing to younger people. Despite these small drawbacks, the game still amazes me and I hope there will be more games like it in the future.

Dang46902

Codename: 45970 from Clayton, USA says (3/Feb/2008):
Um, I know I'm REALLY late on my reveiw but I was busy playing KOTOR 2 and Jedi Academy, anyways, this game rocks, I'm a little dissapointed in the fighting as It's like Final Fantasy, I would love to fight using the buttons and make it like a button masher like Lego Star Wars but heck, not much to complain about since you DO get to be a sith or a jedi by the desicions you make, I've played Mass Effect and this game gets blown away but,not much wrong here, everything else is brilliant, It's the next gen old gen game, It's very good but yet another thing kinda bothers me, the puzzles, the puzzles are a bit obvious and they actually give away the puzzle. I like the start of the game better than KOTOR 2 for 3 reasons: 1. You're NOT a half-naked guy in a tank.
2. You're abord a ship that's under fire instead of being in a mining facility. And
3. You get help from the start rather than just waking up in a tank and automatically knowing what to do.
But KOTOR 1 and KOTOR 2 are both outstanding.
PS: Double bladed lightsabers are the way of the future.

It's a great game, of course!30703

Jean-Luc Poissonnet from Quebec, Canada says (21/Aug/2003):
I am a fan of RPG games, as Baldur's Gate, Fallout or Morrowind... And Star Wars : Knights of the Old Republic is now one of my favorite title. I wont write a long review, but in summary, this game has not many bugs, I played about 100 hours, and the games froze about 1 or 2 times. If you liked star wars films, you will probably like the story of the game. During your adventure you will have some help, as Jedi, wookie and some other non player character (NPC). One thing, I didn't like, it is that compared to Morrowind, or Fallout, you dont have the freedom to do what you want to. If someday, you are angry, and you want to kill a civilian, or want to rob a merchant, you can't. If you want to explore the entire planet, you are very restricted, you can't go on your own explore the entire planet ( like you can do in morrowind). Finally, Star Wars : Knights of the Old Republic is a great game, if you like RPG buy it, fun to come.(But i think that Fable will be better anyway, hehe, do what you want, its your money.)

Great game, slow gameplay28562

Badma Focher from Miami, FL USofA says (25/Jul/2003):
I am a true Star Wars junkie from since I was a fetus, and that is why I rushed out to grab this first of its kind RPG from lucasarts. First off, it seems a bit difficult to grasp the gameplay just jumping right into it (like I do with most Games). However, after a little trial and error, the game seemed a lot deeper than my initial impression. It is extremely addicting, and truly fun to play. I have two different games going right now, one for the light side and one for the dark side. As far as a game that sells itself as a wide-open RPG, I have found it quite linear. On top of that, the Final Fantasy-type attack configuration leaves you wanting more interaction with the battle sequences. If the battles were more interactive and didn't slow the gameplay it would have easily been a ten. But as it stands, this long-awaited Star Wars epic falls short of expectations. I look forward to Galaxies when it finally hits the Xbox (though of course, I'll probably rent it first).

This Game is the APEX of Star Wars games!!!29097

Texas Jedi from Houston Texas, USA says (3/Aug/2003):
I must say that this is undoubtedly One of the most in-depth and detail-oriented Star Wars games I have ever played. The only real problem with this game is the Graphics, they seem to be more on par with PS2 than a powerhouse like Xbox. I like the game because it is an incredible show of just what Bioware can do with Star Wars. This game is, unlike most Star Wars games that fall into the main story line, a completly different venture. It dabbles into the mysterious beginnings of Star Wars, something no other game I know of has yet done. The sounds of the game are awesome, and the smooth transition from stage to stage is great! I give it a solid reccomendation. A word to the wise however, this game is impossibly addicting, so if you WANT to spend those long, 14 hour summer days at your Xbox, Killing Dark Jedi and getting immersed in it's rich and detailed gameplay, this game is for you. This is my Holy Grail of Star Wars, Well worth the 50 bucks

A gamer from stratford connecticut united states says (25/Aug/2003):

One Of the Best Games I Ever Played29948

Bill Denny from Baldwinsville, USA says (13/Aug/2003):
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is one of my absolute favorites! With different responses that decide if you are going to be on the light or dark side, the games really rocks. It does however have a few flaws, I think the game should be a lot longer, I mean, I beat it in 35 hours of gameplay, it should be around 60 hours. And flaw number two, I would like to be part of the fighting, not just commanding my character to do stuff. The good side of that is I can hit pause and tell all my party members to do something, than hit un-pause and watch them do it! It would be even better if you didn't have to be human, it would be cool being a twil'ek jedi! And more bad guys like the rancor and kraite dragon they were realy cool to! Over all, it is a extremely good games, and I hope there will be another star wars game a lot like it without the flaws. I congradulate the makers of this game for making such an awesome game!!!!!!!
