Hello! Excuse me... where is my school? ... Ok, let's go. |
| Brad Felizardo from Luanda, Angola says (18/Mar/2004): |
Man, what a waste of money, i heard a lot about this game so i got it, now i don't know how people thinks this game is great, because it isn't, or maybe they never played other games like Final Fantasy. Just to start, you'll play with a toy face like guy named Ryu, man, this is the worst character i ever saw, i even prefer playing with Eike (Shadow of Memories,PS2), man even Tidus(Final Fantasy 10,PS2) is much better than this 3D-guy!! Just the way this Ryu walks almost breaks my brain, and the camera seems to be on the floor or something, and you can't change it, you may rotate it but it'll be the same when you release the stick. Now, just pay attention to this situation: You are on a foreign country or just arrived, you don't know nothing about it. You need money, you ask anyone on the streets and they will tell you where/how to get it; you need a job, you ask someone on the streets and they will tell you where/how to get it (and sometimes they will take you there!!!); you need to go somewhere, you ask someone on the streets and they will tell you where (and ALMOST EVERYTIME they'll take you there); you need... ask... they'll tell... you need... ask... yeah i see... go there, man! I bet you already can see how stupid this sounds! Everyone on the streets is a tourist guide! Even kids! Just ask that guy to do this here in Angola, sooner or later he'll take a hair chop from someone, a thing he needs. And that poor battle system, man, it's similar to True Crime's Street of L.A. battle system, and something tells me it's worst. This is the worst "RPG-like" game i ever played (yeah, and just like!), i even prefer to play Ephemeral Fantasia (PS2) or FF9 (PS1 !!), i prefer those lil-chats with the people around the towns of those games than just playing a pathetic game where you are a pathetic guy asking everybody where he is or where he has to go.

Not bad. It's like nice art just short of the embroidery... |
| A gamer from USA says (4/Aug/2003): |
The graphics were O.K. A bit revamped (I.E.-higher resolution) but none the less it was the same old school that Shenmue fans will love. Of course, it'd be hard to change the graphics without changing the way the people and characters looked. Although, they could have done some touch up for the people's mouths. Not to be mean, but it kinda looked like someone was just pulling at rubber jaws...
Even though I am hearing alot of violins most of the time, *the background music set the mood perfectly.* It gave you an ominous feeling when something bad is about to/or did happen and it gave a softer tone during free play. Still, it was nothing that will send chills down your spin...
Gameplay is very nice. It gives a variety of ways to interact with the world. In situations you have to think fast, you'll be doing QTE... A couple of bullies? Then prepare for butt kicking... Need a hunch or some clues? Then walk and socialize a bit in the different sections of town. I did notice one bad thing tho, for the less adequate people in gaming, the QTE's will be extremely hard for them (well, in some situations it was hard for me...) but you do need challenges in a game, right? I just hope this doesn't harm the value of gameplay for other people.
The funnest part to me is the free battles. But, as i said earlier, the game contains a variety of ways to go about your business. I think it's certain to entertain many for at least a few hours whenever they get a chance to play.
Considering all that comes in the XBox version, it's worth your money if ya ask me. And I've heard rumours of Shenmue3, so don't think this will die anytime soon. Well, at least I hope it won't die anytime soon :)

Not an improvement, but still great! |
| Stinger Red from Bitburg, Germany says (20/Jan/2003): |
The sequel to the hit game, Shenmue, returns to the on-going storyline of Ryo's quest to avenge his father's murder. The game will have SEGA Dreamcast-owners weeping and Xbox-owners cheering.
Although much of the game has remained un-changed from it's prequel, it's still a fun RPG and will keep you busy for some time. It's a game to play if you have an amount of spare time on your hands; at times, you just can't put the controller down.
The QTEs are more challenging, and the overall objectives are harder to accomplish. The game's new charcters are as complete and fruitful as in the prequel, and one of the most entertaining parts in the game is character-interaction. If the game has a downside, it's the fact that you can only fight in actual battles. Gamers who enjoy beating up and robbing helpless, law-abiding citizens will be dissapointed [buy Grand Theft Auto].
But the overall ability to do and see just about everything in the game is a definite substitute. The city of Hong Kong is a big one, so there's definetly a lot to do and see.
The martial-arts fighting is as good as ever, and many of the moves are taken directly from actual, existing techniques. Sorry guys, not wall-climbing, triple-flipping, or spin-around-on-top-of-your-head stuff here. Buy a game like Tekken if you want that.
So, in a wrap-up; YES, the game is great, YES, it is worth your while, and YES, you do want to go out and buy the Xbox system to play it.
YES, it is that good. Yu Suzuki scored big-time with this one.

A Solid Sequel |
| Cool Topaz from FT Stewart, GA says (1/Dec/2002): |
Shenmue 2 did a great job of picking up where Shenmue left off. I don't know where these "16 bit" comments came from. I guess some people are just a little too uneducated. If you beat Shenmue 2, then you saw screenshots from the Saturn version. That was 32 bit, and compare that to Shenmue, or Shenmue 2. Big difference!! I don't even think the PS2 could've pulled it off so well, and yes I have a PS2 and an XBOX. Sure the graphics didn't get a major overhaul, but Yu Suzuki found what he likes and he's sticking with it. It is all supposed to be one big game anyway. Why would you want the end of the story to look so different from the beginning? My only concern is which console will the rest be on? Doesn't matter I will get whatever it is. Yu Suzuki will make the right choice, let's just hope he doesn't let it die. I was fretting the time when Shenmue 2 was over, and now I can't wait for the rest. This game is deffinitely for more mature gamers that really appreciate games, and aren't just looking for the prettiest one. Great graphics don't make a great game. Don't get me wrong, Shenmue graphics are great, and yes they could've been better, but if you have really played the game, then you know it is the story that has you wanting more. If you just rented it, and played it for a short while, then thank goodness you didn't keep someone else waiting too long to rent it that really understands what games are about!!

Great game, Yu Suzuki is awesome! |
| Ryo Hazuki from Berlin says (29/Feb/2004): |
Anyone out there know how to beat that guy in the bottom on the yellow heads buidling that captures Joy? i can get him the first time but when he fights you again I keep loosing! anyone help me please e-mail. Oh and anyone know where the Shenmue 3 rumor came from, is it true there's gonna be another one? it would be great if there is but they should take there time, a great game with all these radomazations does take time. Is there a site that shows about shenmue 3 is there screenshots or what, i am a great shenmue fan i beat the first almost beat the second, i have one of the first dreamcast's made! its been around 5 years and still is perfectly fine. shenmue 1 dreamcast and i have shenmue 2 on xbox. personally i think shenmue 1 for DC had more heart put into it, it was great Yu put so many more ppl in the 2nd but some ppl sound the same. and Yu Suzuki if you see these i wanna let you know, don't let me down man, Please! make a third Shenmue! Brandan in Berlin.

The saga goes on |
| Gamefather from Macedon, NY, USA says (4/May/2004): |
I dont care what any one thinks this game is by far the best game ever. For these reasons the first one for dreamcast was pheonaminal after playing the game i felt like i knew the people in the game and thought i was actually moving away from my own grandma. You can relate to the game to your self and is the most realistic game ever. you can walk, talk, and do any thing you want drink soda unreal.. the game is like gatorade it makes you want more. i feel like its my job to finish off Lan Di and i have to buy the next one that comes out. People need to take thier time to play this and not give up 2 hours in it. Ive played games from ''Prince of Persia'' to ''Metriod Prime''to All the ''Resident Evils''to ''Halo'' and My brother always asks me if those other games were the best games ive ever played and i say ''No shenmues are the best always to me He says yea they are. I recomend this game to every one!

| Andrew from tewksbury MA says (26/Apr/2003): |
it has awesome graphics!!!!even better than the first.it is on a more advanced system.i have not beaten it but i am trying. it is a hard game.i am stuck on the part where you have to go to th resteraunts and make the symbol.it is really hard.i found people won the fight. then i found more and lost fighting the last one out of like ten.it really made me mad.:(i am still going to try to beat the game.it probaly will take a while but i am going to try my best and even if i cant finish it at least i will have a good time trying to beat to beat the game.i hope the game shenmue will get noticed more.do not play 2 unless you have played one. the game will have you guessing and it wont be as fun as a game.enjoy the game if you have it and if you dont then go get the game because it will change your life.

This game is why I want an XBOX |
| tuna from New York says (27/Dec/2002): |
If you know me which probably none of you do then you know I love Final Fantasy and would buy a system just to play (example: I bought gamecube for when Final Fantasy: CC comes out). Anyway I bought a dreamcast awhile back and bought Shenmue because I heard it was alright...well my friends alright didn't describe it. It was one of my favorite games just falling short of the ff series. So when I heard 2 wasn't coming out for Dreamcast but XBOX I was pissed. I had bought a PS2 and Gamecube but didn't want an XBOX because all it had was Halo. Then I played Shenmue 2 at a friends house and I have two words; GOT DAMN (thats right "GOT" Damn not GOD DAMN but GOT DAMN) This game owned. I may buy a XBOX just for this game.

A masterpiece |
| chikaramochi18 from Sheldon, USA says (1/Mar/2003): |
Just like my title says.....this game is simply a MASTERPIECE. I have both Shenmue 1 and 2 on the Dreamcast....but I also went out and bought Shenmue 2 for the XBox as well because I heard it has some graphical improvement over the Dreamcast version. Well...there is not much improvement....and the English dialogue isn't all that great either (I prefer the Japanese dialogue with English subtitles) but that isn't to say this game isn't great!!!! XBox owners....and Dreamcast owners....BUY THIS GAME!!!! You won't regret it!!!! All others who don't like this game....well...don't play it then. Different strokes for different folks....right? Excellent work Yu Suzuki!!!!! (^^) Can't wait for Shenmue 3!!!!!
|
ADDICTIVE!!!!! |
| TaoLishao from Monterey Park California USA says (28/Nov/2002): |
Who ever thinks this game sux has BAD TASTE IN GAMES!! I mean, shenmue 1 & 2 are the best RPG game ever! of course, it isnt RPG...its fighting, adventure, action,...this all comes out in one form. F.R.E.E. yu suzuki has created a new kind of game. this game has great graphics, great music, great gameplay, and great lastability. both shenmue1and2 have many easter eggs that u can find out. (easter eggs meant by secrets). spend yr money on this and this would last you a life time(exageration, it wont last 4ever but the story will) speaking of story, shenmue has a great story that will leave you entranced in its tale of love, hatred, and morals. i cant put this in words, find out for yourself. (^^)

Shenmue 2, best sequal created? |
| Wrench from cardboardbox,ghetto,sewercity says (18/Jan/2003): |
Shenmue 2 had no graphic improvments but it had no slowdown like the first one did. If graphics is all you care about in a game then I'm sorry if you can't enjoy games for what they are created for. Shenmue 2's realism is superb. I can tell it must of been alot of hard work to create 1000 NPCs, and have almost everyone talk to you. The thing that was missing that was from the first is to interact with everything like in the first, which makes sence because the games's world is alot bigger. I hope Shenmue 3 does not make the same mistakes by not having graphics that can take hold of the x-box's power. If there is one game to get it's difently Shenmue 2.
|
chink games RULE!!!!! |
| Bruce Yutaka from London,England says (26/May/2003): |
Shenmue2 is da best!!! The graphics are overwelming and I think its da best role playin, realife game released. It's so amazing when Chinese Tai Chi,and Japanese Jijutsu link up in da game and shows real martial arts action in it. The Traids of Hong Kong are unbelieveble in da game especailly da gang leaders like Ren,
Dou Niu,and Lundi as you see them use their martial arts throughout da game.
It would be better if da Yakuza's were in da game and I hope they are in Shenmue 3.
So ratings to Yu Suzuki and I recommand this game to da game freaks out there to buy shenmue 2-3 if they wanna see real martial arts Kung FU fighting of Japan and China.

Possibly the best game i've ever played |
| A gamer from ontario, canada says (2/Nov/2004): |
The shenmue games are absolutley amazing. The storyline is great and thats what makes a game good. I have an x-box and shenmue 2 but i never got to play shenmue 1, but it comes with a dvd of the first game, how crazy is that. Even though the graphics cant compete with games like ninja gaiden, there still amazing and the storyline and gameplay are even better. The fighting is pretty cool cause you get a lot of different moves. And the QTE is one of the best things about this game. AND THE STORYLINE! there is no word i can use to describe how great this game is. Buy it if you dont have it- cant wait for shenmue 3, I WANT TO KILL LAN-DI!!!!!
|
Its the best x-box game since ghost recon |
| Adam from dodge city says (10/May/2003): |
I think shenmue 2 is the best game out there for the x-box. I used to just like the x-box for splinter cell and ghost recon, but when i bought shenmue for the dreamcast I just went crazy when i beat it, because I had thought there was not going to be a shenmue 2 for the dreamcast, Because I had just bought shenmue 1 in february of 2002 and by that time the dreamcast was dead for the U.S. then I was looking for games to buy over the internet on ign.com around may, when I had seen a shenmue 2 popup about there being a shenmue 2 coming for the x-box. so I can't wait for shenmue 3 to come out whenever.

GREAT GAME |
| A gamer from cinncinati,Oh,Usa says (13/Feb/2004): |
This is a very good game, its right behind halo.Great graphics.I wouldnt recommend it for nervis people though. Its got great game play.Great story line.Great fighting moves.Lots of things to do on this game. If you get bored with the story you can play mini games(My favorit is darts). Its a long game and dumb at the beginning but once you start you wont stop. This game should be more populer than it is. Dont judge this game by its title its one of the best games for Xbox. Just buy this game You will like it.
|
A great game for a great system |
| Dan from Midland says (22/Nov/2002): |
I think Shenmue 2 really did what it was supposed to. It took a lot of the attention off of talking to endless amounts of ladies about a "Black Car" and more about the development of Ryo and his martial arts training. Everyday you must complete lessons taught to you by someone at a temple and after that you can abuse that power by betting on yourself at a rooftop streetfight. The story is deep just like the first but it focuses more on Ryo and not so much on his father.
|
sadly disapointed... NOT!!! |
| Dimitri says (12/Jun/2003): |
This game has done stuff that other games have never done before. Yu Suzuki is a genius and with other hit titles like Virtual Fighter and other great games this game is going to be big. Only being on the first few chapters and plenty to go you wont find much games where you can continue from the last chapters which took you days to complete
10/10 stars on this one, nice crisp graphics mixed in with a delicious story makes for a great game!
|
just what shenmue 1 fans need.... |
| Blunt_Burner from Norh Carolina U.S.A says (1/Nov/2002): |
I didn't think they could top Shenmue 1. I was a hardcore fan of that game. It was the best game for the dreamcast that I thought. I have played many games and this has to be my favorite right next to Final Fantasy 7. I thought that they had alot to live up to since #1 was so good and they did what they set out to do. This is a must have or a XboX owners.
