Microsoft's first fighter isn't as bad as everone says it is... | | Glade Briggs from Tempe, Arizona says (6/Mar/2003): | I have read many reviews on this game. The vast majority of them have been poor at best. Many hate the game, while professional reviews simple think it is too simple a game to be enjoyable. And while I agree that it isn't complex by any means, it certainly is not completely devoid of entertainment value either. The graphics truly are amazing. I have a degree in computer animation and modeling, and I was very impressed with the models of the characters. I agree that most of the fighters in the game are derivative and somewhat unimaginative, but that doesn't mean they aren't well done. The animation and martial arts in the game are very, very well done, despite what some may say. I've studied and been in the martial arts for years and the motion capture team did a great job. So, as far as the graphics, they are incredible, and do a good job of displaying the Xbox's horsepower. And I still don't get sick of the 'Matrix-esque' finishing move. The sounds are a bit lacking, and the characters don't move their mouths when they talk, but the music is well done. One of the biggest gripes with people is the lack on the story mode, and the gameplay engine. Let me tell ya, the story mode is pretty dismal, that is true. But, let's be honest, who plays fighting games for deep, immersive stories? I sure don't. Which brings us to the gameplay. Most people didn't like it because it was too simple and 'old-school'. I would probably agree with that, but the control scheme does lend itself to some pretty good combos and flowing fluid attacks. There are counters in the game, but no where near the extent of Dead or Alive, and there is a severe shortage of throws in my opinion, but the characters are far from having only a few moves. With the different triggers and buttons to use in tandem with attack buttons the system offers far more than a 'dozen moves' as stated in many reviews I read. Although I do feel that the system promotes button mashing--which may or may not apeal to some, I personally enjoy games with more finese and control like Virtua Fighter and Dead or Alive, but the system does allow anyone to simply pick up a controller and start pulling off some fancy combos. Other than that the multiplayer aspects of the 4-player battle royal mode which I have played with some friends is fun--and like I said earlier, with the button mashing setup, everyone was able to win several matches each. And really that is a good thing. The matches were short, sadly, but they were fun. More fighting games should have a 4-player simultaneous fighting mode, I mean, tag team is cool, but 4 people all on the screen beating the virtual sense out of each other is just plain fun. And that is what games are all about. Definately short of the replay factor, and the overall options are minimal. The Survival Mode is pretty good though. Overall I would recommend the game to more casual gamers, and probably only if you can get it for less than $20 or $30 dollars--like me. If you can find it for fairly cheap, there is fun to be had.
| WoW was i disapointed | | Blake from Fort collins says (6/Dec/2002): | I was really looking forward to this game, the trailers were fantastic, the speed of the game looked perfect i was excited to play it. Then i played oh my god does this game suck. First off there is not meat to this game no life no replayability it just sorta hangs there like a bad cold that wouldn't go away. The only good thing i can say is that from a distance it looks great and it moves real fast UNTIL your matrix style finishing move pleaseeeeeeee give me a break. When they finally come out with a fighting game like Soul Caliber i will buy again but not till then. All in all the look is good but the game play lacks in every aspect and who wants a game that just hurts to play. They had some good ideas they just didn't do anything with them ......And that's my two cents........B
| THIS REALLY REALLY SUCKS | | this blows from houston TX USA says (12/Feb/2003): | When I saw the trailer I was ready to go out and buy it but then when I finally did buy it the first thought that came to my mind was that I just blew a wad of cash on a piece of $hit. Usually I love any game that comes my way with good gameplay and graphics but man I would not recommend this to my worst enemies. No matter how many times I try to trick myself into liking it I still think this blows. To anyone out there considering to buy this I highly dont recommend this game but if you still want a fighting game buy dead or alive 3.
| mastering chojin mode | | joshua from galveton texas says (7/Aug/2003): | After beating the game with all 12 character, master the chojin mode was a totally different experience for me. Yes it is very hard, but I found myself going back time after time to learn all of them. Even now I am still trying. Some chojin moves are harder than other...for instance--Daeva's chojin set is one of the easiets to do. I enjoy finding out new combination sets every time I play with her; however, with J.D Stone it is another ball game. There you have to use your head and actually get down to bare knuckels.
| Love it! | | Sage from Richmond, VA says (26/Dec/2002): | I was stunned when I saw the trailor, and I knew it was gonna be an awesome game from the start, and wooooweeeee, I was right. The graphics are awesome, and the gameplay is great! It's not like Dead or Alive, in which all the fighters are just goodie-goodie guys. Some of these fighters in KC have major attitude. I have to say, Dead or Alive 3 might have better graphics (cut down on the reflection on the characters Microsoft) but all in all it's a very cool game. I would recommend it for most people.
| MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT | | kai from woodbridge,va says (16/Dec/2002): | I was pretty excited when I saw the trailor. When I played it,It was something like i would have played on sega genesis! Nothing really to get your hopes on. If it were like something similiar to dead or alive 3, then I think it would have a chance. I was actually being generous giving it a 3! Maybe this game will improve in about 3 more sequels but I doubt it. have a nice day.
| The Next in fighting generations | | Fred from Kansas City says (13/Nov/2002): | This game has good graphics, and also a good gameplay, Tekken is and Virtua Fighter will have competition with Kakuto Chojin. It's worth the pay.
