Some content unsuitable for those who suck at video games |
| Logan McKinney from Montrose, Colorado, USA says (29/Apr/2003): |
Believe my title, if the awesome power of the XBOX is you first gaming console, you might want to wait a year to grab this game, 'cuz it's not for beginners. I went into SOFTWARE ETC. with 1o$ expecting to get maybe a used memory card, when the clerk showed me a few of the 10$ new games. Most of them looked like trash, but the The Thing caught my eye, I thought this had to be a mistake. But it wasn't, a cool new game for 10$-I couldn't say no! I looked at the back to find that even Carpenter himself (who wrote the book and directed The Thing movie) said "you gotta play this game, man, it'll blast you against the wall!" I plugged it in, and proceded to have the piss scared out of me for the first half hour. I was shocked to see how well it captured the suspense of the movie, but with almost no lame dialogue OR endless wandering around, trying to find a key for the next door. (something I truly hate about video games) This is the first game I've owned where the characters not only blinked, but spoke with lips that mostly matched their words. The fire is also another great part of the visuals, it looks so real! The commanding your squad part is revolutionary, and they don't get stuck in a glitch every 2 seconds like similar games have done in the past. It gets a little tough, but I warned you about that already. I think this game is like Turok Rage Wars only not anywhere near as repetitive, and more realistic, especially the lighting! That's my 2 cents.

first off all i have to say is its about time we get a game where people cuss and we actually have accents in voices to laugh at. not too often you get to see/hear a bunch of rednecks freak out over monsters. that was a plus in my book. the game started off slow due to the fact of you actually having to control many eliments in the game as opposed to just walking around and shooting things, ... i prefer this game over many others liek resident evil because it involves alot of stratadgey, ammo conservtion and no real cheesy way to *make* ammo. the game actually hold a thick plot and gets deeper as each level ends and a new begins. good number of new creatures, not as repetitive as resident evil. nice selection of weaponry, ..no weird music to alert you of dangers --a plus, you never know whats gonna happen-- ...nice level lay outs, not too many labrynths to get lost in. i hate when a game does that and you keep doing circles with no real action for an hour. anyways yeah. lots of good action, eary feelings, creeping monsters, dismembered bodies, flame grenades, infected team members that can turn into creatures that will kill you, ...rap jumping out at you, .....i take back the 9 i gave it earlier and give it a ten, its just all out great.

What are you waiting for? Go out and buy it already! |

Out of all the games I got to play on the X Box this year, The Thing was my absolute favourite. It's a story, a horror movie that you get to play through. And it's just as scary as the movie was when it came out. The thing introduces a new twist to videogames, AI interaction. You MUST keep your teammates alive, and sane. Often seeing the creatures, or the messes that the creatures leave behind, will spook your teammates. Keep them calm, and their gun will be at your side for a little longer. There are also some incompetent soldiers who will not cooperate unless you do a blood test to show that you are not infected with the virus that is turning people into bloodthirsty creatures. With a story like this, this game is a direct hit with me. There are plenty of creatures to dispatch, teammates to guide, and bosses to kill. A tip for you right now, watch out with that flame thrower! Don't be surprised if you step into your own flames a few times, it happens to the best of us. With good visuals and a spooky yet captivating ambience, this game kept me coming back for more, and I'm sure it will have the same effect on you. Will you be able to get out of there alive?

At last!!! |
| Jan Rytkönen from Kalix, Sweden says (16/Oct/2003): |
Usually, games based on movies get to be worthless piece of garbage... But this one really earns to get some good rewievs!
When I started playing this game, I felt the that the gamemakers really had put an effort bringing the true atmosphere from the movie to it. The feeling of isolation and the paranoia that comes creeping when you aren't sure if one of the team members are infected...
This game is also quite challenging. Not one of those that you get by playing the whole time in one day!
There's one thing though, which wont make me give the top score... Sometimes it feels more like this game belongs to the category of action. You run into monsters to often so that the feeling of getting catched by surprise! That's the thing that kills the entire "the thing" feeling...
Don't get me wrong on this one. It's really a good game... It's usually hard to create games based on movies like "The thing" without losing some of the atmosphere... I can really recommend this game if you're really a loyal fanatic to the film. Still, if you're not... You still got to give this one a chance! You wont get dissapointed!

Very nice...generic blood and gore, but everything else was good |
| Howie from Oregon, USA says (6/Nov/2003): |
When I was reading the reviews about this game I noticed someone said it was predictable. That makes sense to me but to be fair, they did make a movie about this game years ago so what were they supposed to do, change the characters and plot and ending and everything else they could think of and then still call it 'the thing'? No, this would not work. I think the resident evil series was really good horror games. Scary, gory, and most of all...unpredictable because no matter what happened you couldn't check in a book or the movie to see what to do. LIke I said in the headline up there, about the generic blood and gore, I'm sticking with that because there was really nothing new or relatively special...well, that's all for now.

THIS GAME PWNS!
I love the creepy surroundings and the dim lighting, you never know if something will jump out at you from behind that desk, or from the window. It always keeps you on the edge of your seat. The plot becomes better and better as you progress. I am a true fan of the movie, so i gues thats why i love this game. If there was a rank higher than 10, it would give it. But even if you didn't see the movie i think you will like it.
This game ROX!

good but not brill |
| Dave from Warwick says (3/Oct/2002): |
at the start i thought this game was a bit slow but as i progressed through itbecame more impeling. the game is quite scary but doesent meet resident evil on game cube.the charactors are well made and the voice overs are very good. the monsters do look quite blocky when up close. the xbox version is by far the superior. the game lasts about 4 hoursand is worth playing again for the different routes.
i give this game 7/10

Good but predictable |
| AlienArchon from Manchester, USA says (19/Sep/2003): |
Every team member you get becomes infected, even if you blood test him mere seconds before he's about to Thing out. That's my only quarrel with this game. Other than that it's pretty creepy and EERIE, and since I was such a fan of the movie, I really enjoyed being able to 'play' a bit of the movie myself. And not only that but I'll probably be directing the next one!

Sha-WING! |
| erny faulken from England,uk says (7/Jun/2003): |
This game has got most of the stuff that really good games need, but the dissapointing thing is :( there are no cheats. Its spooky, its weird,its...SCARY...,but the main thing is..the exageration of monsters, you can just be walking down a corridor and you get eaten or somthing, or one of your men throws up,lol, the bits where they turn out to be aliens is whacked

This game is relly eary, but thats what makes it fun. |
| Crair from West Nyack. New york says (26/Nov/2002): |
The Thing is a really exciting game. It has no music, which is a miner disapointment, but the game itself is fantastic. The graphics and suberb. I like the way that the men react with their environment. It's so life like. If you don't own the game go and buy it. Beg your parents for it. STop reading and get it! Why are you still looking at this? Go! Buy it!
