Good Game13986

Brubaker from Eastlake, USA says (29/Dec/2002):
Mech Assualt is great game. The controls are similiar to those of Gun Griffon Blaze but on an XBox controller and not PS2 controller. The games graphics are done quite well. The games major flaw is that you cannot customize a mech. You can choose from several different mechs but going through the game with that one simple variation doesn't seem as much as it was meant to be. Another thing that I didn't like is that in multiplayer playing by yourself you can't put bots on the screen (like in many of the new fps). The last flaw of the game was its a bit short.

Wow13677

Some guy from surrey, Canada says (27/Dec/2002):
To all the "Battletech" fans who wrote critical reviews, no offense, but... GET A LIFE! My goodness, this game was excellent! Awesome graphics, sweet weapons and gameplay, and multiplayer. Who cares if the game is "politically incorrect" in the battletech universe. It's still awesome! I did think it was kind of stupid in some multiplayer games when you have to walk around as a tiny little man, and I thought it was kinda dumb that you couldn't change the thumbstick controls, but still once you get used to them it's super awesome. I also thought it was cool that they included infantry, tanks, and aircraft, and that they did the third person view. The sound was right on and the people who help you throughout the game were immensely... helpful. In most other shooters, in the campaign mode the "bad guys" get killed way easier than in this game. I liked that because you actually have to move around and do something to win instead of just standing and shooting. Although this game was part of a large series of COMPUTER mech games, I think this game was for A VIDEO GAME CONSOLE and therefore should not be rated so harshly.

not for Battletech fans, but very good otherwise13359

SoA_Tempest from MA says (23/Dec/2002):
Not considdering Battletech in any way, this game gets a 7. slow movement and lack of costomization, as well as few chasis and a forced 3rd person view subtract from the score. Being able to blow up almost anything and the use of infantry make the game very good. Considdering Battletech and Battletech games, this game gets a 2. In the manual, the Mad Cat is said to be 100 tons, it is 75. Also, the Thor, Catapult, and Vulture are Heavy mechs, not medium, and the Mad Cat is a heavy, not an assault. Mech speed is way off. The light and medium mechs, as well as the Mad Cat, move way too slow. Also, the fact that the PPC is a charge weapon (much like the bomsat laser) is enough to make Battletech fans very dissapointed. Also, there are very few weapons in the game, and the larget volly of missiles is 4. Also, you have to chose from a varient list, no mech lab. If you've never played MechWarrior or Mech Commander, this is for you. If you have, dont bother. The MechWarroir series is far superior.

NICE, BUT SHORT13254

Zero from Seven-Point THIS! says (21/Dec/2002):
This was an awesome game but I beat it in two days of hardcore playing. Probably around 5-10 hours. I never took a real good time check. Anyway, this game is good graphically, but I would have like to see some personalization. Make your own mechs with your own specs. That would have rocked. The Ragnarok is alright, but the lighter mechs can (sometimes) tear them apart in groups. Overall, a great title to own. AWESOME!!!

Very good action shooter13157

Brian Young from Philadelphia,PA, USA says (19/Dec/2002):
I did enjoy MechAssualt. The game design and graphics are great. However it seems that the designers did not consult as much with FASA as they should have to make the game "historically" accurate. The mech names and weapons performances while graphically nice are wrong. Other than SRM-2\4's there are no missile launchers that do what those in the game do. The Battletech Universe is based on a lack of technology and therefore weapons are mostly dumbfire and do not track as well as those in the game. There is no option to customize your mech and the damage models are not very good either. If you are looking for a game to entertain people who would just like to see big machines stomp around and blow up things, I would say buy it. But if you are a diehard mechwarrior you can only wish that MS would have but more detail and thought into such a beautiful game.

If You Like Doom, Quake, its a Frag Game13044

Shawn J. Cottles from Ohio, USA says (17/Dec/2002):
First Let Me Say Its a Really Cool Game...The Graphix are great, little if any slowdown and you can destroy almost anything you see..... but it seems more to me a mech version of quake or doom

I own Mech Assault & have Live and its a blast to be talking stuff and trying to back it up in the arena (which btw are great)
But I'm more of a Elite or Mech Vet...I've Played the real Battletech for over 10 years...Played Battletech The Cresent Hawk Inception and Revenge, Activision's Mechwarrior and Mechwarrior online (back in the 286 days), Mechwarrior for the Sega & SNES, Mechwarrior 2 (P 75 days) and Mech 3 and 4 (MS is nice but their not activision)
I've Destroyed Army upon army of mechs in Mechcommander 1 and 2
And I Have Been To The Chicago Battletech Center 9 Times (btw a must for any Mech Elite) so i have a little Knowledge about the Battletech universe (and all FASA universes for that matter)
The Varients IE Madcat / Timber Wolf are incorrect most the mechs in the game are Clan Omni-mechs which are reconfig'ed to 5 or so diffrent designs where MS decided to use the Inner Sphere Name (Mad Cat) and the Clan Name Timberwolf and 2 diffrent versions...(it goes on for the other clan mechs this way) picking a diffrent ver of a mech is the closest you can come to mod'ing your mech the Misslesystems suck IE most madcats have 2 LRM 20's That means 20missles launch per LRM20 and the LRM range is almost that of a Gauss rifle or PPC...not so in this game
If Your Looking to pretend to be a real mechwarrior in this game...forget it...if you want to go online and talk some trash and blow stuff up its right up your ally....

(On a Side note...The Weapons systems in the madcat are just a example...its true with all the mechs in this game...And While in my days I've Taken out a 100 ton Atlas with a 20 Stinger just to prove it can be done...this game tends to favor the light to med weight classes)

Thats it from your old Friend the Phoenixhawk

Great starter game for any xbox owner12744

John Shindoa from Bradenton, FL says (11/Dec/2002):
Ihave found that it takes time to make anything good and this is true with mech assault. Though the makers spent a year and a half making it it was worth it. The online play is amazing espessially when you are in the middle of a huge fight and your guns are blazin and your trying to shoot other players and being shot at the same time I find that to be an amazing aspect of the game that many others cant or wont match.

I also have steel battalion and this game dollar for dollar is worth more than it.

so i guess all i have to say is just this is a great game and i am very pleased.

crushuhard from Denver says (10/Dec/2002):
This game is totally fun and is non stop. Also people are complaining about not being able to customize your mechs. well guess what people. the game is live capable; you will be able to download updates!!! this means this might be a feature in the version.

Great Game12486

Thrillho from Indiana, US says (7/Dec/2002):
Overall this is an awesome game, with great game play and fast pace mech destroying action! Yet, I tend to lean more towards the Mechwarriors for the computer, MW4 and MW4 mercs are just completely awesome. Mainly since I've followed that battletech universe for a few years now and I like to be able to customize my mech's and be able to target seperate body parts. Yet Graphics, and gameplay in this game are above par, keep'em coming microsoft

what a huge disapointment.12526

A gamer says (7/Dec/2002):
i was really hoping for some specs on the mechs, but in the multi player mode you have to choose the game based on a mech name with no info. what is that about?

also, when you come back as a little guy, you can't do anything but blow yourself up. think, guys, think. I would say better luck next time but this game sucks so bad i dont think there will be a next time.

FUN12526

Garrett from SLO says (4/Dec/2002):
I have never played a mech game before mech assault...This game is not only a good mech game it is a great title to have in your collection. I just bought it yesterday so i am still getting pretty shelled. One cool thing is in last man standing you come back as a little man. This creates a whole new way to view the game. I am used to Ghost Recon where you have to view what the other person views. I would recommend this game for anybody.

Mech Assault vs. Mech Commander (computer)11963

Chad from King says (28/Nov/2002):
Mech Assault is a good game but ive come from playing mech commander a long time ago. online its one of the funnest games ive played (mech commander). One thing i dont like about mech assault is that u cant modify ur mechs like in mech commander u cant customize them wiht ur own weapons and payloads. The game is still fun but i think it would be better if u could modify them urself

Oh yeah!11857

A gamer from Orlando, Florida says (26/Nov/2002):
Yeah, I played Netmech way back. I was in Wolf Clan and played a lot. When I put Mech Assault into the X-Box and started playing the first mission I about crapped my pants. If you've been playing X-Box FPSs and are pretty used to the controller you'll not have a single problem with this one except maybe in switching weapons with the buttons. However, the left trigger can allow you to make some complicated turn and strafe moves while switching weapons. So, I'm sitting there playing the first mission. My brother asks, "Hey can you do that thing you used to do where you'd jump on top of them?" I immediately DFA'd the first three guys... I'm so hooked I can't stand it, and I'm 26 years old. Buy it. If not for Mechwarrior combat, go blow some buildings up... it's really fun. Michael

Superb game that really shines on XBox Live11678

Scouseknight from Bootle, England says (23/Nov/2002):
I bought this for XBox Live but I have to say the Campaigns are very good also and I find myself splitting my gaming time up between doing the single-player campaign and playing it on-line.

But it is the on-line play where this really comes to life - it is simply a great game to play against other human opponents.

It's daunting at first on-line though - you get annihilated and seem to always have the wrong mech or get caught in the middle of firefights but this is all part of learning the ropes - I am yet to kill more than I get killed in a game but it doesn't put me off trying more - I look forward to the day all my friends are on XBox Live and we can have a right old blast on this.

The only downside with the Live implementation compared to, for example, MotoGP, is there is no way of knowing who is talking - this is annoying when some jerk is giving out foul mouthed abuse - you don't know who it is.

Difficult to find fault with the game itself however - it's fast, smooth, noisy and above all, very playable. I prefer this over Mechwarrior 4 on the PC anyday - the controls are well thought out and this makes it a pleasure to play.

Arcade style Mechwarrior with fast combat.11687

A gamer from Miami FL USA says (23/Nov/2002):
If you compare this game by itself it is a good title and solid gameplay. Compared to previous Mechwarrior games especially if you have played the PC games you will find the gameplay leans heavily on arcade fast and furious combat with power ups. Not being able to load out your Mech can be frustrating as well. If you are seeking in depth game play with strategy or tactical depth then you should rent this one first before purchasing to see if you like this gameplay format.

Graphically few Xbox titles can compare to the quality and detail displayed by Mechassault. Buildings crash to the ground, windows get knocked out, smoke and fog effects, etc. Seeing your Mech stomp around just like Godzilla in a monster movie makes it a lot of fun as well.

Sound quality for effects like explosions are pretty dead on but the music track is really lacking and you get a lot of repeating music loop tracks. Fortunately it does not detract too much from gameplay.

The Single player side of the game is linear and only offers one or two solutions to solving missions. Multiplayer is where this game shines though and that is why its a premier Xbox Live title. With its fast combat and less detailed choices will appeal to a broader audience and add more fans to the Mechwarrior series - its a smart move for broader mass multiplayer appeal. With a wider appeal more players will be available and add to the replayability of Mechassult.

Minor bug: one of the things I noticed early in the game was in a mission where you had to protect some civilians, after destroying the enemies in the area I noticed something odd. The vehicles passing into the tunnel could not actually enter the tunnel. Since the game did not actually make the tunnel complete the cars where colliding into a wall and causing them to build up into a pile. Fortunately the cars, trucks, etc did not explode on each other, which could possible lead to a mission failure. Again this was a minor bug and did not affect gameplay but was a disappointing detail that could have easily be solved with more QA. Also being able to punt vehicles is great fun but why can’t you do the same with small enemy tanks?

Overall this game is fast clean fun and a great xbox lan party title –but- if you are looking for a good single player experience and don’t plan on taking advantage of the multiplayer experience then rent before you buy is best policy for this game.

The best keeps on improving11577

Derek from El Cajon Cal. U.S.A. says (20/Nov/2002):
Since MW2 The whole Mech concept has been popular enough to be borrowed or stolen to make many pseudo variations. To me nothing is as good as MW3 but this comes close. A wide variety of Mechs and Weapons plus the X Box live play is out of this World. Play it get it you'll love it. Wouldnt mind being able to have the $#< remove me > at !pit view though

Good game11505

A gamer from Fort Wayne, IN says (19/Nov/2002):
I wasn't much on Mech games but this one is great. It is pretty tough for me, but the demolition is worth it. A couple things though, they need to let you see the Mechs when you are cycling through the selection list and color. This would be a lot better than looking in the book. Also, some slo-mo breakaway shots when the Mechs blow up would be cool.

All i have to say...11390

Mike Parsley from Norfolk, VA, USA says (17/Nov/2002):
is if you like mech games, you'll love mech assault. it combines the attributes of previous mechwarrior games (for the PC) with fast paced melee. and what makes this mech truly better than it's predecessors, is that it a helluva lot faster. the controls take a little getting used to, but once you've gotten it down you'll be able to out manuver most opponents. the A.I. is very good, even on the easier levels of difficulties. i have yet to get xbox live, but i can't wait to play some other gamers online. the voice acting is top notch, and it'll keep you interested. i just got it a couple of days ago, and i've only completed the first level of difficulty, but i can guarantee that the higher difficulty levels will take alot longer than two days to beat. that and the levels are enormous. the versus mode has alot of flavor, ranging from complete frag fest, to using eight players against up to four or more bot mechs controlled by the computer. the demolition effects are great, trees ignite, and buildings crumble with great precision. almost anything is demolishable.! the only reason i don't give it a 10, is because, well...it's not HALO. but if a sequel should come out for this game, it wouldn't surprise me in the least...and i surely hope for one.
