Brilliant on so many levels, but lacking on others...23180

Tom Brookes from Worcester, England says (10/May/2003):
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (available for the Playstation 2, Xbox and Gamecube) and a simple hack and slash game that follows the storyline of the first two films perfectly.
The graphics were detailed and intricate, but the looks of other characters (such as civillians) are simple and repeated. I would have liked slightly better graphics, but the one for this game are still crisp and realistic.
Secondly, the sound. The music and sound in the game was brilliant. Though many of the spellbinding tracks are repeated too often, the music was very well done and helped give the game a more realistic and dramatic feel.
The gameplay for this game was sadly lacking. The missions consisted of just killing everything, and because the game was just a hack and slash game, all the levels were easy. Though tactics are used against nearly all enemies, the fact is that you just need to hit all the buttons at once to perform a good move.
The control also linked to the only average gameplay, as though the controls were mainly very good and quick to get used to, the simple fact that all you need to do is repeatedly hit the fierce attack in order to kill most of the enemies prevents the game from taking a realistic and potentially hard feel. Many of the moves that you could 'purchase' with your upgrade points were far too hard to perform, and even if you did press all the right buttons succesfully, your character may not do the proper action anyway.
Lastly, the environments in the game. Though all of the terrian was true to the films and it was all beautifully captured with the graphics engine, the environments were quite linear and allowed for little to no exploration. I hate when a game makes you wander aimlessly throughout the level because the creaters tried to make you 'explore' but if every sinlge level is just a straight line with a few enemies that pop out of the background, it is not satisfactory.
Overall, The Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers is a fun game with great graphics, sound and overall entertainment rating, but the few levels on which the game failed really prevented the game from being truly great. This game had a lot of potential, but the flaws of it and the fact that parts of it were so linear brought down the score. The game will last you about 3 weeks at most, but do not let that prevent you from buying this game. It is very entertainning and looks great, so buy it if you are a big fan of J.R.R. Tolkien's creation.

Lord of the Games22623

NNS from St. Petersburg, FL, USA says (30/Apr/2003):
I liked Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. It is quite challenging. Playing as Legolas, Gimli, and Aragorn, it was fun to hack away at hostile soldiers. New moves, new tricks, LOTR 2 is better than the first one! There are a few drawbacks however. The graphics, for one. The graphics in this game are pretty good, but they could be better. Other than that, I loved Lord of the Rings and I recommend it!

The Two Towers Review21793

Patrick Gilhooley (The guy who knows everything on LOTR) from Marton, Middlesbrough, UK says (20/Apr/2003):
The lord of the rings the two towers video game has a certain effect over the player, its because that the films were such a great success that they made it in the first place. The game features good sound and tracks from the fellowship of the ring and the two towers which makes it a game that is perfect for people who loved the original sound track. The characters Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli and isildur are all unique in more ways than one, they all have different weapon moves and features which makes it hard to choose a character to play with on your first level. They also have the voices of the original actors from the film which is a bonus feature of the game itself. They all have a certain feel about them. The graphics of this game really bring out the best of the environment you are in and the characters look like the do in the film (not including cut scenes). The game itself is very easy to understand since it goes through the basic controls in the prolouge and you get help futher through. The characters in the game vary in size, speed, ability and how well they take attacks eg. Aragorn get the highest health bar eventully while legolas has the smallest. I persoally give this game 10/10 for fun and entertainment if you like the reviews and get the game be sure to check with what people say.

One game to rule them all.21629

Boromir of Gondor from Southampton, Hampshire, England says (18/Apr/2003):
This game is the best ever! I've been saving up for this game for a month and not in vain! This game is more than excellent! The graphics are gorgeous (Espescially since it's an Xbox game with a PS2 engine!) and the best bit is that it has real DVD footage! The combos so smooth and the movement does major justice. Here is a list of all the aspects of the game:

Gameplay:
Gameplay is the best part, pulling off spectacular moves and going through amazing enemys like goblins, orcs, uruk-hai, trolls and wargs! The cool part is that you get three different players and you get to choose any of them on each level. With Legolas you've got amazing bow skill and your really agile where Gimli's like explosion waiting to happen and Aragorn's a mix of both. The AI is pretty neat, enemies dodge, parry, hide behind stronger enemies and against multiple enemies they will go for the best target and send a couple to deal with the lessers. When protecting someone (Like on weathertop) they will usually give you someone to fight to distract you while one goes for who you're protcting. Overall the Gameplay is marvellous.

Story:
The story is pretty obvious as they make the FMV's and DVD's as short and to the point as possible and the story is up to code to the movie. Though, one little thing dissapointed me; they didn't include Sam, Merry or Pippin and that was ashame because they are significant characters and humorous at times too. Still, otherwise all good.

Graphics:
Gorgous graphics, even though they are PS2 graphics. Explosions are excellent and leave fire after their done. Fire is quite good for a PS2 engine and as for the water; marvellous! It waves and flows faster near waterfalls. The water evenmoves as you walk along and slashes are excellent. Overall, the graphics are amazing for a PS2 engine.

Audio:
Excellent, amazing sound effects. The Troll snorts are just like in the movies, Goblin screams are just incredible, Uruk-Hai roars are so amazing! I also like that they got the actuall actors from the movies to do voices. The music aswell is neat; it is so amazing when there are hundreds of Goblins are pouring into Balins tomb and there's intense music, so amamzing!

Replayability:
You have to replay this game, you wouldn't feel complete. Anyway, you probably haven't done all the levels with each character and there's still the secret character to do the levels with aswell. Imence replayability!

Buy or Rent?:
Buy it! You must! It is the best game ever!

Overall:
One game to rule them all, so you can find it, one game for you to play, and in your room, bind you. It is the only adictive thing which does not kill you!

Better than the first game!!!17618

A gamer from Tampa,U.S.A. says (16/Feb/2003):
Now this game is one of the best for Xbox and I advise everybody who's anybody to buy this for PS2 or Xbox. The graphics are stressed in this game and you'll be amazed by the gameplay and handling. The controls are not confusing so it's pretty hard to die(that is if you don't totally suck at the game). The boss fights are unique because each time you have to do something special in order to gain a hit. All the players you use can have their own combos. I would have given it a ten but I found that Gimli was a poor fighter and the game could of been longer.

GREAT MOVIE, GREAT GAME, GREAT MUSIC!14957

Arend D. Hart from Michigan says (7/Jan/2003):
As a big fan of the LOTR movies, it was a pleasure to check out the Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers game. As you can see by the reader reviews below, LOTR:TTT is the thinking man's hack'n'slash game for 2002. I'd seriously suggest checking this one out.

On an aside, I also checked out the LOTR Soundtrack (see: SOUNDTRACK) and it's spectacular.

Hard but an excellent game!14745

Sean Clarke from Sterling USA says (4/Jan/2003):
I would say it could have been better but it could have been worse. At times it can be very frustrating like the level when you have to fight the cave troll. Other times it can get very boring trust me, killing the same guys over and over again. I have a good example when you fight the cave troll for the first time he is very, very hard but after fighting him a few times its like fighting a orc so it gets boring quick. On the bright sides they did an excellent job with the detail in faces to make them look like the movie. The gameplay is very smooth with a good developing game plot that you will be dying to finish the game the first day you get it (it is a fairly short game). The most interesting aspect of the game is the leveling and point system, you can buy your moves and depending on what you buy with your points some parts will be easier than others. For all you legolas fan this is a game really gives legolas a spot in the sun as the best charecter. For gimlie fans this will be a hard game if you like to be him due to his slowness and absence of an arrow. This game has its pros and cons but i say the battle at helms deep is the reason i gave this game a 9 that was a really long long level with lots of orcs for all you battle hungry fans. Excellent game I suggest the purchase of it especially for XBOX!

Very well done!14652

B from Los Angeles, Calafornia, US says (3/Jan/2003):
This game can now be called an epic. Playing as Gimli, Legosas, and Aragorn is great but talk about gameplay. Pressing X like a mad man won't get you very far but earning combos will. The cinemas switch from game graphics to the real movie and then back to game graphics. Back to the combos. There are a ton of unlockable combos in the game and new weapons. You buy combos and weapons buy earning points which get you levels up. When you level up more combos and weapons become avaible to buy. The graphics are suberb though in my opinion they could use a little work. But to insult this work of art would be insane. If you are a proud owner of a PS2 go out right when your done reading this and buy this game. Lets face it people, there hasn't been a game like this in years.
