Tao Feng is a GOOD fighter but NOT MK! Virtua Fighter reincarnated! | | samdawgsol from okc, ok says (22/Mar/2003): | Tao Feng is a really decent game. The fighting style is very different from most games. This game relies strictly on combos, with a "Chi" attack awhile once enough moves have been performed. This attack is basically the only projectile move in the game, which is different from most games. For the game to be made by the co-creaters of Mortal Kombat, it lacks alot of the gameplay of mortal kombat. Blood doesnt stay on the ground, no projectiles (as stated before), no fatalities or finishing moves of any sort. The arm and leg breaking that the producers brag about is cool, but not very effective in the game. If you constantly block you will eventuall lose your arm or legs or whatever you block with and attacks from that area will do 50% damage. But it takes way too long to get of this done in a match.
Now for the good stuff. The graphics are really good. The skins are very smooth and detailed. The enviroment is somewhat interactive with poles, shattering objectives, and ability to bounce off the wall. After each round the player is more bloody and beat up, some characters more than others. The combos are cool and effective, but sometimes hard to pull off. The blocking in the game is effective with a lil skill and so is the grab. The "chi" can be used for an special attack or to heal arms or legs, which is basically a waste later in the match, for matches arent that long. The special chi techniques are not blockable and for some characters take a while to do. If you get hit while doing the attack, it doesnt work and you lose all the chi. This game may take awhile to perfect a character and fighting styles, which may be while my experience wasnt the greatest with it. But then again, I was expecting something like mortal kombat and not something like a suped up Virtua Fighter
| This game wrecks! | | Shawn from Waco, TX U.S. says (10/Apr/2003): | First off, this is a good game to play. One of the best RIGHT NOW. Aside from MK DA, this is one of the best out. I can say that because there isn't much competition. It seems like today, they don't give a crap about making fighting games. I mean, come on. Remember when MK and Killer Instinct were out around the same time. I mean back then fighting games were pretty fun. Not to mention the arcade was popular. Now all they make is piss poor fighting games. I mean, where's the fatalities and stuff like that? Where's the real combos. You know what I mean. The ones like Killer Instinct. The game that actually gave Mortal Kombat Competition. Look at the games they got now: Tekken does suck(I don't care what anyone says), DOA3 is alright, but it's mainly just graphics, Sould Calibur is alright, VF4 sucks, and the street fighter series(well who really keeps up with all those crap games anyway?) I mean come on. They just ain't makin' fighting games like they should. Tao Feng is pretty good, but it does need a little bit more. Now the camera angles can change at odd times, but me personally, have no trouble with them because they'll change when I'm in the middle of putting a big ass combo on your ass, and by the time it's over the camera angle had already changed. Now this game isn't better than Mortal Kombat. Some of you might be hard headed, but let's face it. Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance IS the best fighting game out right now, and I doubt anyone's gonna be better until Killer Instinct comes out for the X-box. In short, this game wrecks(compared to the competition out there that is).
| An amazing entry into the class of fighting games out today! | | Jae from Tullahoma, TN says (23/Mar/2003): | Ok, the guys from Mortal combat have out done themselves with this one. The control you now have over not only your character but your enviroment is amazing. Tired of beating the living crap out of someone only to have them pull off a comeback because the beating you gave them did nothing to slow them down, well, no longer. You take out your target's arm and they do less damage, their legs and they move slower. Both and they become your little toy to play with. Your size(height and weight) come into play with how far you can reach and how fast you are, so now choosing the 'cool looking guy' wont work every time. While most of the moves have the same button combos for each character, they have their own signature taste to each of them. So transfering from one character to the next is easy and quick. The backgrounds and personality they have given each character is worth sitting through and some of the 'entrances' are worth seeing EVERY TIME (example: Geist) Each character shows its damage with black eyes, bruises, and torn clothes...this is how a fight is supposed to look, and sound..the Doldy enviroment is great. From the drums in the practice arena to the water at the docks its all part of an atmosphere that you may not notice but still expect. So, why the 8 out of 10, not enough hidden...is their hidden goodies, yeap, but not nearly what we have come to expect in todays fighting games. Good job over all guys, worth the price!
| Very good | | Brandon from Cleveland, USA says (2/Jul/2003): | Alright. You see my rating, I think this game is excellent.
Challenge yourself, if you play for a few weeks and still can't beat the computer on easy.. or even medium.. then you just aren't cut out for fighter games.
Those things are the very reason that this game is really good. You can't be a button masher, if you are, you'll lose every single time to anyone that is even half decent. And blocks are SO easy to pull off, what is this that I keep reading about blocks having to be precise? All you do is hold the back button until their combo is over, then do a power move in their face while they are bent over.. or start your 12-15 hit combo and watch 30% of their life come off. The combo's are hard, yes, but that's good. The graphics are beautiful, you can play single player, multiplayer, survival(which I love), and tournament with some buddies. Hell, you can even watch replays of single player and multiplayer matches.. if they are high scores anyways. And yes, the sounds are really good. The camera angles are fine, they don't change all that often, and sometimes the framerate dies and it makes you skip.. but that happens very rarely
The only pitfalls that this game has.. is the very bad storyline and the scripts are horrible. But if you listen to the old chinese man for long enough, you won't even notice anymore.
Rate the game for it's ability to be played, not YOUR ability to play it.
| Naysayers ... STOP WHINING!!! | | Iceman from New York, USA says (29/May/2003): | Tao Feng ... what can I say? It sucks!! ... For the people who can't play that is! Yes! I have played virtually all the well known fighters, on different platforms, from MK to DOA to Tekken, all sequels .. THIS is my favorite. Yes, it is NOT easy to master, and that is exactly what I love about it. I was bored and done with the other games within 8-12 hours of play time, but I can't get enough of this game. I've had it for a week, and can't wait to get my hands on it everyday when I go home from work. Sure, it's not perfect, and I agree with some of the reviewers here who say that they got their A$$e$ kicked while the camera angle changed, but that is exactly what's so challenging! It is definitely NOT a button masher's game. You have to use strategy AND timing ... and it varies greatly with each character. With some you have to attack more, with others, counter-attacking works best. I love the graphics, and the board layouts. The boards are designed to FEEL a lot larger than they are (which works very well). If you are the non-strategy-using-hit-any-button type, then this game is definitely not for you, but if you like to get challenged I would recommend it whole heartedly.
And those who whine "it's too hard" ... "can't do combos" etc etc .. go play Mario Bros or Donkey Kong ... no wait ... Frogger! LOL
| Tao Feng is Tao Weak ! | | Way Hobbs from Phila., P.A., USA says (25/Mar/2003): | Tao Feng looks good at first, but you soon discover that it is nothing more than a combination of DOA and MORTAL KOMBAT 4. What else could we expect from the co-creator of MK ? The graphics are okay and the sound quality is up to par, but there is no real story mode,no hidden characters or items to make the Quest mode worth the effort to complete - especially when you must compete in 6 battles with every member of your chosen clan to complete the Quest. It gets pretty lame after awhile. And what's up with the limb damage effects? No matter how good your Kung Fu is, you can't still strike with a broken limb-not to mention the cheesy way that they quickly heal. Tao Feng is not a keeper, it is a game you should rent just to see the special features like the CHI moves and to watch the fighters bounce off the walls or spring off the poles - which is the only redeeming quality in this game besides the breakable objects. Rent it indeed - but don't buy it. It will get boring and stale pretty fast. If blood and breakable objects are what you crave, then it's MK 4. If it's unique arenas and chacters, then play DOA or TEKKEN 4 because TAO FENG isn't a replacement for any of them and doesn'tlive up to X-BOX's potential. TAO FENG is good for the moment, but only the moment.
| very good but needs something ? | | Batdawg from dayton , ohio ,U.S.A. says (29/Mar/2003): | Overall I think this fighting game is very good.I am a very dedicated fan of the tekken series...I own every one....so This game was alittle getting used to ...the fighting system is a little tricky. All attacks are combo based. You must be precise with your blocks which gets very frustrating...and once the cpu starts an attack with its combo...it can't be blocked...that needs work. The "chi" attacks add a little variety but most are kinda lame.I like the idea of limb damage...it gives you more pause in how much you need to attack and wear down your opponent..but the same can be done to you.I like this game...it takes time and patience to learn all the characters fighting styles to be effective in combat. Which is another thing this game is in desperate need of ...More characters!! There just isn't enough to satisfy me.The graphics are very good..the colors and real time damage are fantastic! The fighting is fluid and furious(it could still be more violent in my opinion). I still like Tekken and Virtual Fighter more ...I 'd tell any fan of fighting games to check this one out it needs work...but I think its is fair to say it holds its own in the genre..I am looking forward to Tao Feng 2.
| Small problems- but some serious | | Rabbitlobos from Arlington, WA says (20/Aug/2003): | Ok, for those of you who complain about the computer AI: I'm pretty sure it cheats. Yes, it pulls off extremely difficult and nasty combos- but anything less wouldn't be worth the title "Brutal" would it?
I have some suggestions though- learn to cheat by paying attention to the computer AI. You are being out thought and outmaneuvered- so take some notes. You can't do much about the camera angles, so try to avoid situtations where the angles change (hit the pier for the first fight- it's the nastiest environment). Set the number of rounds to one. If you can't figure out why- I can't help you. Lastly, pay attention to the Comp strategy- it can be worth a broken limb in the long run compared to getting beaten. Blocks absorb all the damage- but if you absorb the entire combo you get a free shot for a combo of your own. Uninterruptible is not unblockable and your chi healing will leave you with good health and a sound body long after the other guy is turned into hamburger.
I bring this up because the whole dynamic of the game changes when you start to block and then counterattack. Until you get there though, you will think the game sucks, because you aren't playing the game.
| Good but not great | | Joe Kim from Albany, NY says (29/Jul/2003): | I've heard a lot of mixed reviews about this game before I purchased it. The truth is, both types of reviews are correct :). The game moves and looks incredible... The story line is actually pretty good for a fighting game, and the controls are very responsive. However, Tao Feng lacks big time in the gameplay department. I don't mock the gameplay because of it's combo-driven system, but because if you get hit with one of the 15-20 hit combos, you are pretty much screwed :) until the combo ends. The game basically comes down to who can do the same, repetitive, move first... because if you land first, you don't have to really worry about retaliation. All the characters at least have one move that cannot be interrupted in any way. SO instead of becoming a very strategy-driven fighter like soul calibur, virtua fighter 4, and the street fighter series... it becomes a cat and mouse game of who can hit first...
I enjoyed the game... and it was actually very easy to beat once you learned the 10-20 hit combos.
At the end, it is a fun but extremely flawed fighting game
| Bad gameplay keeps it from standing out | | Eric from Okemos Michigan says (23/Mar/2003): | While Tao Feng is graphically stunning the overall gameplay is terrible. The training mode has repetive voice overs and you find yourself being defeated by the cheap CPU and overall the game is not that much fun. However I do like the limb damage it is really cool to see that in a fighting game. There could have been more characters but you start with 12 and can unlock 3 so it's not really that bad. I thought Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance was a much better game than this so if you have a choice than go MK. A big problem with the game is the blocking. It has to bee so precise and that is very hard to do without practice. One thing that's good is the weather effects. In one level there is a scene where it is raining and you can hear tunder and see lighting that is really cool. I wish you could go online with tao Feng but the only time it is fun is when you play with a friend. overall if you love fighting games and want more than MK and Tekken that maybe you should look into this. For me it was just hard to get into I give Tao Feng for the XBOX a 7/10.
| way toa fenging hard | | filicia22x from cocoa beach fl usa says (11/Apr/2003): | yes i ran right out a bought this "wonderful" game
and popped it in and thought the graghics are great but the game seemed difficult so i played it like a mad dog for days and days and it aint getting much easier and its on easy! so no this aint your momma's fighting game it takes some mad skills if you want to beat it i was able to get the pale mantis"good guys" ending and it still unlocked nothing .....big dissapointment
and ive got a few fights left with the black mantis"bad guys" and the more i play and better i get the more the game kicks back all you can do is block till they break you and try to hit after blocking if you try a throw you get thrown and if you just start swinging they will pull super combos on you and its on easy i dont get it ,i go way back in video games and still remember double dragon which i could beat in 2 quarters and mastered capcoms games loved killer instinct and doa2-3 of which i still play but htis game just fustrates me it is so hard and that and no real unlockables with only 12 charaters makes this title a renter
| this game is not for the 10 minute testers. | | Porcelain from Allentown, PA USA says (7/Apr/2003): | This game totally requires fast thinking and hand eye coordination which blows away any MK or Tekken. If you play the game for 10 minutes ofcourse it will get you frustrated. Play the game for a few days, put some hours of pure learning and train with a character you obtain a feel for. The camera angles wont boggle you anymore once you get the timing down. For those who are going to ebay their copy you are making a grave mistake. Give the game a real chance and get out of the botton smashing fighting modes. The combos where made this way for a reason. For those that love the game and appriciate it's brilliance and originality i'll say to you keep your game up and learn the vast number of any character's abilities and combos. You will learn once and for all why button smashing is a thing of the past. I have beaten the game on the toughest (brutal) level ( and by no means was it a walk in the park). I still play on when i get the time to find out more strengths and weaknesses of each character. I gave this game an 8 out of 10 because nobody is perfect.
| this game isnt for wossies | | scott from sparta, wi says (28/Apr/2003): | I think this game is great, for the first time real cuts, black eyes, and broken bones. Yeah i know it is hard i mean damn hard but what do u expect this is not mk1,2,or3 where you can beat the first 6 guys with the same move and not get your butt kicked the first time you pick up the controller. I hear alot of people want more out of the game why? Usualy when you first buy a game u get 4 people to fight with then you have to earn the rest but now that you get all of them but one guy people seem to be mad about it c'mon lets face it fighting games are meant for more than one person they are party games and for the hardness of the game I dont know about you but i like a challange it is fun and the fighters actualy fight back and no more ladders to climb and continues to run out of at the last guy just to start over. Like with ki who pulled off a 40 hit combo the first time they picked up a controller? not me but i learned how to. Give the game some time you will learn to love it.
| Decent at best | | Adam from Glastonbury, CT says (21/Mar/2003): | This game seems like it was made for the soul purpose of the graphics. It was a game that looked so amazing it made me buy it. All I opened though was a big disappointment. Don't get me wrong the game isnt all bad, it has some features I have never seen before in a fighter. The limb damage and off the wall attacks are great new additions. The rock bottom part of this game for me was the AI. Im not sure if the computer is good or cheap. I don't want to make the game sound so horriable though because it has the most amazing graphics I have seen for Xbox yet. The blood, torn clothing, and mangled cinimatics between each health bar are a sight to be seen. All the downfalls are with the computer though, playing this game with friends is awesome, not being able to pull off the shabby combos doesnt matter when you both have the disadvantage, when it all comes down to it....Its worth renting. I didn't feel like spell checking either :)
| Tao Feng has a lot to offer but needs more options!! | | Byron from St. Paul USA says (10/Apr/2003): | I would give this game a ten out of ten (the graphics are spectacular, sound is awsome, and the gameplay ideas are revolutinary) i like the idea of limbs being broken and the environmental damage u can cause. The game uses a lot of previously unexplored principle, i have yet to find another fighting game that allows u to leap from walls, swing from poles and break the environmetn around u. The combos are a little tricky but that's what makes the game more challenging. The chi however could be a little more interesting. The camera angles can be a little frusturating (at times it's almost like u have no control over the fight because of the wierd angles. I also wish that u didn't have to beat the game in quest mode with bothe sects to get only one unlockable character. all in all the game is great i just wish there were more unlockable levels and characters.
| Pretty...looking...hard | | Magdalena from San Diego, CA says (23/May/2003): | I have played and enjoyed my share of fighting games, and this one is definitly the owner of the best graphics. C'mon, look at Fiery Phoenix's velvet pants (torn or not!)! I love the arena attacks, and the combos that are difficult to pull off, but so-very satisfying when you do. Although I just got my Xbox, and have been playing lots of other games I already am halfway done with Tao Feng. Good thing I still like to play it in Versus Mode! Which brings me to the point of wishing there were more secrets to unlock, more arenas, more alternate fighting modes, and what about weapons?? This game is beautiful, and has lasting power in the versus mode, but if you want a game with many challenges, more characters, modes and secret unlockables I would go with Mortal Kombat, and for a cheap Xbox game I think Xmen Next Dimension is pretty fun.
| People: PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE (it does payoff)! | | Jamie from Chicago, IL, USA says (15/Apr/2003): | I hear many complaints about this game. I saw it in a magazine like 3 months before it came out, and I got it the first weekend it came out. The graphics are beautiful. The sound is awesome, the hardest part of the game is learning the controlls. I beat it in a week with all the fighters. I'll admit the final people are hard, but you got to keep going at it until u beat them. I once spent 45 min. on 1 final guy. Believe me though when u beat it it will be worth it. There is a hidden character however u have to beat it with both sects to get him. The best tip 4 beating ur competition is sidestepping, so sidestepp ur butts off! This isn't the best fighting game ever....but it still ranks up there in the top 15, I SAY.
| Not bad for a first attempt... | | Sabian from Ellsworth, Maine USA says (4/May/2003): | The graphics rock...period. The storyline is weak, but the game doesn't enjoy the longevity of MKDA (yet). One thing it does have is the ability to throw or grab your opponents in close combat. Contrary to what others say, it's quite easy to beat an opponent by mashing the buttons. Also, the character profiles aren't all that hot. The good guys (especially Firey Phoenix) are geeky, and the villans need to be more sinister. One of the best aspects of the game is knowing that if your opponent keeps blocking like a wussy, you can break his freakin' arm.
Look for Tao Feng 2 to be much better, if it can combine it's strengths with that of the Mortal Kombat series. All in all, not a bad first try.
| People who don't like Tao Feng just can't handle a more complicated, realistic fighting game. | | mookjunior from Minneapolis, Minnesota says (9/Jul/2003): | The fact of the matter is that this fighting game is for more advanced gamers. Not the wannabee gamers that don't know how to time a combo or can't handle a complicated one with more than just three buttons. The reality of this game is outstanding; the fact that you can get limb damage after being beat down in the same spot is great. The actual fighting style of this game is very unique. It has an up close / far away style unlike the traditional high / low style (mortal kombat / dead or alive... which were also fun games). I highly recommend this game to more intelligent, advanced gamers who would like a challange. It takes a minute to get used to but it well worth it.
| RUBBISH | | $ Money from Ohio says (30/Mar/2003): | i played this game for about 10 min. i am amazing at mkda and tekken and what not, but when i have beaten the living day lights out of my opponent and broken both of his arms and he is with a tiny bit of health left, you'd think i would win, right? wrong! the camera angle changes when you are defending, the computer's limbs do no less damage and i get a 20 move combo busted out on me, all on the easiest mode. Not even worth a rental. XBox cant make good fighting games unless they are just button mashers (doa3). Stay clear of this one as though it had the ebola virus and covered in poo. I wouldn't even spit on it if it was on fire.
