nice game to play for hours | | Dave Cornhole from Tipton, IA, USA says (7/Jun/2003): | this game is a great! unlike some people i DO think this game is or can be on the grand theft auto level. this game is more realistic than GTA for instance there are no display or map some people think this is stupid but i think it just ads to the fun and the realism like when you never are to sure when you squeeze the trigger you will just hear a CLICK but you should have some kind of idea. and the navigation is going to take some time to get used to but it works a lot than you probably think.and it is real original. another thing that is great is that there are real cars like Nissans and Lotus witch are much better that made up cars. in this game unlike GTA VC your protected by the police for instance if you are being chased by gangsters at a high speed then cops will try to kill the gang members instead of only going after you like there are NO gangsters. another great thing that is so realistic is that when you are having a shoot out with gangsters OR the cops you can crouch behind you car and take air not at the enemy but at you enemy's car (the gas tank) and blow them away, that is pretty damn cool. and like in GTA you can pop tires on cars that is kind cool but it can be annoying when that is all the cops do. and when you are under some heavy fire you can grab a pedestrian. and make them your own personal human body shield!
the heart of the story line is nothing special, a gang boss and his thugs frame you for killing your wife and kidnapping your son, but that is just the beginning, after a few missions the story line gets MUCH more original. the story sometimes gets very complex, at some points and in some parts it will through out some pretty good humor. but the story-line i don't think is as good as GTA.
about the sound, the voices i think are pro. actors because they are great but it took a few main to get used to the accents.
the gun sound FX are better that any game i have ever played. one of the best sounding guns is the AK-47 it is better that some movies i have seen! the sound if the cars are pretty good but something to be improved but doing burn-outs sound cool.
this game is also great in the fact that it takes a LONG time to get board of because it is still so much fun after you haver beat the game, because there is a great free roam mode that allows you to do this. this game (where i got it) was 45$ certinaly NOT a waste of it at all. i strongly reccomend this game!
(as you plobily noticed i referred to GTA Vice City Allot in this review i think they are both GREAT games about equal in quality but, if there was a GTA5 and or true crime 2 they could both learn a lot from each other)
| True Crime Rocks! | | A gamer from Linclon,USA says (13/Nov/2003): | True Crime is a great game. You take the role of detective Nick Kage and from there roam around an kick the holy crap outta thugs, mobsters, skinheads, and the like. You can be good or bad, this is determined by a karma like icon. If are to bad for your own good, well the police will chase you as well as citzens. During most missions you can roam and handle 'street crimes' like stopping muggers and bank robbers or drive straight to the spot and get the story on with. The story is very good. It starts with Triad violence in China Town and from there goes on to the Russians and even the North Korean Military.
You can upgrade everything you can go from your starting revolvers to Desert Eagle .50's with laser site, scope, flashlight, you get the picture. Cars and combat moves are the same. On the X-Box you can download your own sound track although the one they provide is very nice.
Bascially this game is amazing! here is an example of what a convict will do: A man known as the Eastside Vampire has hijacked a ambulance full of blood, your job arrest him.
After a short car chase we both hid behind our cars and shot it out. Then he ran right before I caught him he hijacked a differnt vehicle and drove off. I 'borrowed' a vehicle to pursue. After another car chase through the city he had to stop (I had blown out all of his wheels). This time he took a hostage and we shot it out. After trying to shoot through the hostage (I was low on life normaly this would not have happend) he hijacked another car and another car chase through the city took place he stopped and I eventually killed him.
This was not a mission just a normal street crime. The game does get hard and is shorter than either GTA but has more demth.
| Far from GTA | | RobD from Ontario, Canada says (6/Nov/2003): | If they had not hyped this game as the "GTA Killer" than that would be one less reason to compare it to that but they did and it isn't. True Crime is good...and has some very strong points but it's a far far far cry from the world that R* created where you can lose yourself in the streets. This game is just a souped up version of Starsky and Hutch and steals a little from Dead To Rights, Max Payne, GTA and other huge big sellers. This is NOT a bad thing and they do a good job and I'm definately glad I picked it up but even still, it's not the best game this year, and anyone buying one game this week should go for GTA Bundle for X-Box all the way. On top of everything else True Crime was not ready to hit the streets, it has bugs, it's choppy, it freezes and it's wrought with invisible walls, people walking through things, and bums getting stuck magically so that you can't get near them. At least if you're trying to take out the best selling video game of all time...try and make the game pristine before throwing it out there. Looking forward to mistakes fixed for a TC 2. Also...person doing review before this....you're calling it True Crime but you're reviewing The Getaway....Nick Kang from True Crime is not accused of murdering anyone...and his son was not kidnapped....that was The Getaway.
| What a disappointment. | | Alex from Chicago, USA says (15/Nov/2003): | When I first heard about this game I was really excited. "Another, more realistic GTA? How could I go wrong?" But everything that was said about the game was a lie. There is no "free" roaming of L.A.. Roaming; yes, but free, i think not. You can't hit pedestrians, you cant go in buildings, you can't do any mini-games. The city is boring and traffic is light, making for a terrible time driving across this sometimes to large map. Its like the creators of the game thought that the only reason games like GTA are hits is because you can drive. Also, there are only like 7 different cars and you can only cary the same two guns. All the others (I counted about 5, but I may be one or two off) have a very limited amount of ammo and you can't reload. The missions aren't nonlinear, and you often start one mission right after the other. The Nick Kang, the main character, is one of the most annoying videogame personalitys I have ever come acoss, he repeats the same things over and over throughout gameplay. The story is sketchy and thrown together (poorly), so I guess you could say it goes with this game well. Overall, one of the most disappointing games I have ever played and if you must play it, rent it because I can almost gurantee that you will never want to play it again.
| better than gta | | chaomatrix from Dublin ,Ireland says (4/Nov/2003): | This game rocks!full stop.there is loads to do and you will never get bored of it.the graphics are class and do the game justice as the feeling of real life graphics gives the game a better feel itself.real life sounds of the guns would have you replaying bits of the game just to see how cool it actually is.the gameplay is brilliant as things happen like it was a real life situation.this game will last you for ages,so your other games will be spending a long time on your shelf.it is very original like it is taken straight from a stephen seagal action movie and there is a good story to it which gets deeper as you progress.there is also a brilliant free roam mode which would have you playing for ages even without doing the missions. The fighting looks like choreographed fight scenes from the matrix and make gta's fights look like girls fights.the driving is cool but takes time to master, the motors handle lighter than a dry sponge,it is like this so that you can pull of whacky manouvers to take out your enemy.you can also do street races and earn better motors.freeways are cool and the map is huge. This looks to be one of the best games of 2003,and at 45 quid it is a bargain.i recommend this game to any fan of the gta series and fans of action movies.100%coool
| Gret game, but needs improvements | | Norman from Long Beach, CA, USA says (11/Nov/2003): | I bought this game with extremely high hopes, just probably as much as everyone else has or is going to. However when i unwrapped it and put it in i was a little disapointed. Although bieng able to move the lower half of the main screen is kinda cool.
The game play of True Crime:Streets of LA is exactly like GTA 3 in my opinion. The free roam, the movements and the graphics. I tell people that if you like GTA 3 you will like this game, but True Crime lacks polish and luster.
I have found ways to lock it up, the game has glitches and if you do it right you can jump through barriers and shoot or get shot through cars and barriers. The driving aspect of the game is nice. I especially like the fact that they use real cars. Honda civics, Escalades, Caddies, Volkswagen Cabrio, Lotus, ect. The sound of the honda civic is wrong though, especially with the way it looks, but you can't have everything.
So, in conclusion, True Crime: Streets of LA is a good game for what it is, and for what they wanted it to be, but it is not the game that was worth all the Hype. GTA 3 i think is a little more solid of a game and a lot more fun for the money.
i give true crime a 7 out of 10.
| not bad, not bad at all | | slapma bag from MAINLAND, AMERICA FAR AWAY FROM ALASKA says (20/Jan/2004): | i found this game to be very entertaining. it was a lot like gta, but i like this one better. i personally love fighting games with punching and kicking, and i rarely rely on guns to get me out of a situation. this game has a fighting section all in itself. the action is great and everything from weapons to combos made me difficult to stop playing. this "dude" from alaska (the very negative opinion below me) has obviously been spending too much time up there in the cold. his brain must be one big ice cube. time to move back to wear the sun shines warm and take a better look at what corporate america has to offer for video games.
back to the original topic-the gunplay is also very good. you can pick up one gun in each hand, and they can be 2 diff guns too. however, the weather is fairly nice and sunny, with no snow. unlike alaska. so i gues there would be almost a culture shock when he plays it. maybe he should try that wolverine game, it takes place in a snowy mountian. he might feel more at home....
so i strongly suggest atleast the rental of this game. it gives on mainland americans a very high sense of pleasure. i rate it a 10 and stand by it
| Play before you diss | | gimpy from Oconto Wi says (27/Dec/2003): | Okay, first of all this is not Grand Theft Auto people, Its True Crime streets of LA. Many people complain about how bad and how boring the game is. I will be honest in saying this game has some repetitive problems but True Crime is huge. The problem People will play it straight through and not take the time to enjoy the sights and cause mayhem. Instead they choose to dislike it because it has some flaws and isnt JUST LIKE GTA. Now lets get to the review
Graphics-Xbox has the greatest advantage of Graphics,Clear and Good detail work is done in the cars and the enviroment but could still be better.
Control-Hard to learn easy to master, it takes time so dont rush in or else you wont have a damn clue what to do some actions involve clicking the joystick and pressing a button but its easy
to do.
Design-Great, LA is massive, 3x bigger than Vice city. It took me a half hour to drive down from downtown LA to The end of the map,But it depends on what vehicle you are driving too.
Verdict: This is a great game and shouldnt be passed up;whine and complain all you want but you know the game rules
| The David Hasselhoff of Reality Crime Games | | MinneHipHopolis from Minnesota says (24/Nov/2003): | What a weak game, I was looking forward to at least a few days of playing, then I realized that the road that my missions were travelling down was almost over with. Then the game was done already. What the fuzz! The game was done before it even got started. All the rave previews of the game sounded promising, I don't know what everyone else heard, but I was hearing that it was better than GTA-VC and that it "was so realistic that if you go somewhere in the game you can go there in real life" I don't know if this is really what LA is like, but the streets of Minneapolis have a whole lot more cars and hundreds more people than this game did. Graphics were way less than I expected too, looked like Mario 64. All in all, if the game had about 5 times the amount of missions, totally different graphics, and well, nevermind, nothing can save this game. I'd rather buy an Ngage then deal with the stereotypical Russian again.
Oh yeah, Big ups to Christopher Walken, but doesn't the man deserve a better animation than a fat cop who works in the shooting gallery? Come on, we're talking Christopher Walken!
| Nice try, but a little off | | Mike from USA says (25/Nov/2003): | Well when i first picked up this game i was excited to see what it intailed. Ya know cuz all the hype about it being way better that GTA. Yes the game does have its high points but common, the game is crap and everyone knows it. The thing i hate most about this game is the fight missions againts the bosses. Who the hell wants to fight when you have two freakin degals that can easily blow em' away. Plus fighting the bosses is extremly hard too, you actually have to block if you want to live.. i dont wanna block, i just want to kick the $#< remove me > at ! outta em'. The city is wayyy to big and the is wayy to little traffic for it to be LA. And the gun thing wtf, you can't change your guns at will? Who wants to play a "shooting game" when you only can have the two same guns the whole game, and yea you can pick up guns of defeated enemies, bu they have like two bullets left in em' and you cant reload. Yea so pretty much this game sucks my left nut... and whoever said this game is better than GTA what the hell was he smokin!?!? cuz i need to get me some of that $#< remove me > at ! if it screw up your preception that much.
| This game is CRAP compared to GTA3 or GTAVC | | Alex from Chicago, USA says (13/Nov/2003): | This game is total crap compared to either of the recent GTA games and anyone who says differently is very easily entertained and a moron. The missons aren't nonlinear, and a lot of the time you progress directly into the next mission. The only time you get to explore the city is in a few missons where you need to get to a certain location, and even when you do get to explore you don't have any freedom. You cant hit pedestrians or your cop "rating" will go down and the game will only last a few missions, and I beat the game completely in 4 days, that means all three (shi++y) endings. There are only about 7 different cars and 6 different guns (you only get to carry the same two, and all others only have a very limited amount of ammo)and the fight sucks because all it you can do is kick and punch hoping to get lucky with a hit or combo of some kind. If your desperate to play this game (I will admit that I was) then rent it, because you will only want to play it once, guranteed. The graphics are only average and this game is pretty much your average shooter.
| Fantastic game, accurate streets low on action to keep you guessing. | | Ben from Santa Monica, CA. says (23/Mar/2004): | True Crime is a fun game for the first few days that you play it but I thought that it became rather dull after the same crimes kept happening with the same results in the end. I won't knock the game play though. I still find myself drawn to it. I live in Santa Monica and I have to say that I am especially impressed with the accuracy of the streets and how they are layed out but I was disappointed to find that where my apartment is supposed to be there was a store front and probibly more crime then I could put up with in real life. Another disappointment was the fact that you can't walk (or drive) onto the Santa Monica Pier. I'd recomend at least renting the game to give it a chance, see what you think and make the decision for yourself. I'd like to see more cheats and clues for this game but I don't really see how any of that could help. How could you be a cop in LA and really have a (good) status in a game that begins with the word True? One of my problems with the game but that's a whole different story.
| ...Some Cons About the Game | | Phoenix from Melbourne, Australia says (13/Nov/2003): | For those aspiring to purchase this game, I would say it would be a wise choice. However, there are some things that one should take note of when deciding. Firstly this game immensly violent and unsuitable for people under the age of 18 years old. Also, getting accustomed to the controls of the game is a big hassle, on average, it takes people between 7 hours to a day to figure out, and be quite comfortable with the whole setup of driving, shooting, driving while shooting and learning to kick ass. Finally, for those die hard fans of Quality visuals all i will say is don't hold your breath because consoles have a tendancy to screw graphics up, and they have quite so, with the vehicles and scenary displaying what can only be described as "Playstaion 2" graphics (nothing near the 1600x1200 standard gaming resolution i am accustomed to on computer). Overall, the game does deserve a lot of credit, especially for its VERY satisfying fighting scenes. Enjoy.
| CRAP | | Ben Cowan from England says (23/Nov/2003): | True crime streets of LA all the hype surrounding it saying how much better then gta it was going to be well it isn,t it isn,t even close and thats from the mouth of an xboxer. You start of at a (for a first time playing) an insanely hard target practice after failing that you have the choice to choose between continue story or reply mission the chances are you will pick continue story because the target practice is so hard and boring then you have a miniute an half to drive to E.O.D which for a first time playing)again is insanly hard as for the graphics all a can say is CRAP CRAP CRAP they stink there is no detail and there is soooooooooooooooo many glitches there good things though for example the city is big and killig people in the streets for no reason is fun (for a while)the lifespan is about as long as a greenflys life you will complete it within 4hors tops.So for 40 quid this sucks.
| this aint no GTA | | sublimer from canada says (12/Nov/2003): | True crime should have actually been calles true crap, the game is short and easy, good luck getting the cops to chase you in this game it does not happen, the cammera is glitchy and the fights are mental, the city is huge but theirs really nothing to do in it cause it dosnt matter how many people you kill no one responds, so as far as anyone saying this game is better than GTA you would have to be blind and semi retarted the city in gta is much more alive, notice that in true crime theirs barely any traffic, yeah that seems like l.a ,,, true crime is a verry cheap attempt to make money off the gta franchise, i say worst game ever GTA rocks its so deep and overall a better experience, for the price of true crap you can get 2 games that scored allmost perfect 10s as opposed to 1 game that scored a 7
| Boring | | A gamer from Chicago says (12/Nov/2003): | I beat this game in about 4 hours. I did all of the missions except for the last and the one where I have to infiltrate the building... There were a total of 10 different cars... racing(mitsubishi lancer)-lotus-mercades-escalade-nissan spoon-jetta, convertable- and a oh man it was a 70's car convertable looked like a typical pimp car.
That was it, if you find a cool car you can't save it anywehre!!!
Though if I wanted to do this game full out, maybe do the car missions and spend a lot more time at the dojo. Maybe the game wouldn't have been repetitive and tedious. Though really these driving missions pop out the tires got really boring.
So here's a hint; play the game the first time around, all out. Or there will be no drive to play it again. For me anyways :-/.
| Kickass! | | jew h8er from state of constant h8red says (4/Nov/2003): | The game is the best of it's genre, GTA will live in our hearts forever as a milestone for the type of gameplay, but there needed to be a game that bridges the gap between GTA's all out war and TRSLA's Good cop bad cop action game. The cutscenes look exactly like the cutscenes from knock out kings 2002, and are very fluid in the way they move. There is no telling the difference between cutscenes and the actual game except for the fact you can control the actual game. The branching story line offers you a chance to replay and see different outcomes of you actions, and the random crimes will always give you something to do if you are bored and just cruisin'. I recommend buying this game along with GTA's double pack, b/c each game has it's own up's and downs.
| This game is crazy!!!!!! | | TruLenny from Minnesota, USA says (6/Nov/2003): | The area available for travel in this game is unrivaled. After I first purchased the game I cruised the freeway from one end of the city to the other, and it took me between a half hour and forty five minutes to do so. It would be better to have an arsenal of weapons at your disposal rather than just picking up the guns of fallen enemies(and the ammo goes fast too), but the action packed shooting sequences are fullfilling enough. It is fun to try all the different cars in the city, but you have to be careful not to get ran over trying to flag them down. The comparisons to GTA3 and Vice City are justified, but True Crime has many little things that the other games don't to make for a good gaming experience. I suggest it to gamers of all kinds.
| kyle | | kyle from leices says (3/Dec/2003): | honestly i think this game is great! the storyline is good the fighting shooting and driving are excellent-when have u ever known a game where u can choose to ride on the two wheels of a car tipped at a diagonal.! none. If you earn how to fight properly u can make it look well sweet. IM diassapointed to see all these poeple saying the games crap-because it blatently isnt! Iv'e read some people are saying the first shooting practice is insaneley difficult! and he calls himself a true xboxer.! twat! Honest to god that first shooting practice is peice of cake. My 8 year old brother completed it first time round. To any one whose thinkingf of buying it i higly recomend! its a superb game, really go out and buy it.
| Waaaaaaaay overated | | Dude from Ketchikan, Alaska says (9/Jan/2004): | This game is way too overated. This is suppose to be a GTA clone and it is nowhere near it. GTA is an easy 10 stars this is 4 and that's pushing it. I'll give it credit, the high speed chases are fun until you have to turn, the cars are so damn stiff. It's better off just driving around busting criminals than doing missions bcuz they're so easy. It has a huge map, which I like, But this game is soooo irritating. I was waiting for this game for a few months and was very disapointed when I played into it. I literally played Max Payne after a couple hours of trying to enjoy this game just to play a good shooting game. Rent this if you want, it's no where near a buy.
