Forget the hype and dissapointing reviews, see it for yourself. | | LittleJoe from London, England says (23/Nov/2004): | Lionhead studio's masterpiece rpg was long expected to be the best of the best. However, once released the feeling was of dissapointment.
The game however is anything but dissapointing. The story follows a young lad who grows to become a great hero. The sense of freedom in the game is its greatest asset, allowing the player to wander the paths, forests and streets of Albion as much or as little as one wants. The ability to purchase and rent out buildings offers the player with the chance to become a roaming real estate tycoon, spending his riches on expensive weapons or expanding their property collection. Other players may wish to go on evil rampages wiping out whole villages and watching their inhabitants slowly develop back into a thriving city.
The other major game feature is the character development system. This is one of the main features in the game and works very well. For example, if you kill an innocent villager you will develop to be evil, but if you save a village from bandits you will become good. Every decision you take affects your moral status and your appearance also alters over time to reflect this.
The graphics in the game are great with decent lighting effects and the sound provides a good atmosphere during the tense action combat.
The story may be short, however there is plenty more to be getting on with in the vast worlds. Mini games and sidequests can be mastered and relationships with villagers can be forged and broken.
A game such as this could only ever be dissapointing to industry specialists because of the huge and underserved hype that surrounded it. If the game had a surpise release and no one had ever heard of it before i think the reviews out there would be much better and the word "dissapointing" would never even have been considered. Don't be a sheep and follow the mags, buy it for yourself.
A great rpg.
| It's good, but not epic | | Jaime from California, USA says (23/Sep/2004): | I was so hyped up about what I heard that I preordered the game right when I heard that I could. When I brought the game home I was hoping to be able to walk around and do anything I wanted. I was limited to certain things in the towns. Sure, I could kill everyone, but the guards continued to respawn and it didn't have that realism there. The thing that disappointed me the most was the map. I really didn't like the transition from road to road that kept me blocked in by unchoppable bushes and solid cement walls. I was hoping to be able to wander around anywhere and do anything like I was told I could. I didn't like being boxed in with the only variety on the map being whether I could go left or right at the fork. Another thing I didn't like was the collecting of the experience. Just give it to me. I killed the guy didn't I?
Some good things were the ability to change the looks of the character and the graphics were excellent.
Some things I would change would be 1) Let me have freedom to wander, not just move from map to map 2)I want to be an orc or half-elf or gnome or something like that with those attributes in the true style of RPG 3) the mini map took a little while to get used to, I think it would function better if it rotated around the character 4)The game was waaaaay too short. Put a lot more sidequests 5) make the good/evil thing more interesting. It didn't do anything for me one way or the other. It wasn't a big deal 6) I'd like to be someting more than a fighter, mage, rogue (or combination of the three) 7) If I can open a door, let me close it too.
The game was good, but it didn't grasp every minute of my attention and if I didn't play it, I was ok. I want something that I can't stop thinking about. I want to think about it in my sleep. I thought that this game was going to be like that and it wasn't.
| A Really Great Game... | | Zahgurim from California, USA says (27/Nov/2005): | Fable was THE game of my dreams. It had everything: Allignment, Marriage, Sex, Alcohol, Secrets. I have beaten it over and over with good and bad. I have had my anti-xbox friends play it and they LOVE it. They could add some things to it though:
-Children. If you have sex, maybe you can become a father? And whatever your allignment is, maybe your kids may become also.
-Bigger areas. Like towns, mostly. All the towns are small (with an exception for Bowerstone...). The "woods" are pretty big, but they're the only things that ARE big.
-Genders. Its awsome that you have a male character (who, by the way, looks A-W-E-S-O-M-E with horns...), but what about the girls? It would be sweet if you got to choose a female character. If she were good, maybe she'd look like a Valkyrie. If she were evil, perhaps a sexy Succubus.
-Attack Skills. What good RPG game can't go without attack skills? Combos, magical sword attacks, ect. would be better. Don't just keep your support spells!
-Legendary Armor. If you have legendary weapons, you MUST have legendary armor. It's a part of the "Legendary Code"!
-Spouse training. It would be weird, but maybe also cool if you got your spouse to train and fight with you. Dress them up, give them weapons...Your alignment would be their alignment.
-More Weapons. They have a great variety alrieady, but it's just different types! Swords: Long Sword, Katana, Cleaver, Greatsword. That's what I mean. We should be able to have Spears, Flails, Wands, Staves, Double-Bladed weapons, Knuckles, ect.
| Great game, but not what I expected. | | Jack from Newbury,United Kingdom says (18/Oct/2004): | My title sums it up. I had been waiting for Fable for a long time and I was eagerly anticipating the release date. I was in for many suprises and many disapointments. The first thing I noticed was that the grphics were brilliant, the world looked very realistic. However, overall the game was far too short, I completed it twice in 3 days. However hard i tried, I could not make the game last longer the 13-15 hours. When I read all the reviews I was expecting a long, vast game like morrowind. The storyline is very good but it is pretty much the only thing you can do on the game, follow the storyline. In my opinion that is not what I wanted to do, I wanted to create my own story... like the game developers promised. Appart from these bad things, the rest of the game is good. Despite its short length, the huge amount of detail that has gone into the developement of the towns and people had me stunned. e.g. Children will go to school, have break times, then go home. People will have a certain job which they will carry out everyday. Then at the end of the day they go to pubs. The NPC's inside the towns have their own lives and the world evolves around the main player.
So overall, the game is worth buying, even though it is short, it provides those hours of fun. I can only hope that they bring out a Fable 2, which will contain what many gamers out there have dreamt of and expected of fable
| A GREAT Game with some needs of improvement | | Carlos de Cordoba from Mexico D.F., Mexico says (26/Jun/2005): | Overall Fable is a fun game (especially when you get drunk and throw up in people's houses :) ) The graphics were not all that great but were pretty good for an Xbox game. The gameplay wa fun as you could choose between good or evil. The quests were too short, that is true but don't wiz threw the game, have fun with it. Find all the silver keys, get married, rob traders, get people drunk and then rob thier shops, walk around town in your underwear... I don't know use your imagination. Some things that would be cool for improvement would be...
1) To have a horse (a great hero needs a great stede) and have the horse change with your personality (for example if you are a goody two-shoes the horse becomes white if you are evil the horse turns black with red eyes)
2) Add towns with different races (such as Orcs, Elfs, Halflings...ect)and you can create your character as such
3) More armour and weapons
4) Become known in different towns (for example if you are evil, one town is inhabitied by good people, you walk in they are afraid of you while the other town inhabitied by evil people cheer you)
5) The legendary weapons should posses you or augment to your personality. Like if you get a weapon owned by someone evil you become more evil.
6) Legendary armour would be nice.
| Fable, is way too short | | Jack ;) from Oakvale says (11/Oct/2004): | ok, so I was hoping that Fable would be the best RPG these days... but when I beat it in 13 hours, with almost every side quest, I was disapointed. Game is too short, after i threw the game's best sword away, game just ended right there, and watched the credits, i continued playing, but didnt have any more questes and the only thing im left with, is to marry women and kill monsters which are almost impossible to find.. the thing is there is no point playing after u done. The game itself has a good graphics though, and i really ejoyed that "stop time" magic spell, which reminded me of the matrix :) hehe, but once again it was too short, and its not like u deside how to build ur own path... u just follow the script, either good or evil. Soo following the story line which is writted by someone else, isnt what i expected, u have one guild that ur in from the beginning, and they give u quests, u do them in like 5-10 minutes, u get old by 2-4 years... thats right ur getting older by like 2 years killing 12 bandits in 4 minutes, and u dont get old when u traveling urself, getting expirience for hours. so my last words would be: Thank god i rented that game for 3 days, not 7 :P, not talking about buying it hehehe.
| Is it a drea, | | Ryan Skibbe from Scott City, Kansas says (15/Mar/2004): | Can you imagine the programmers of this game the idea development comes up with an idea like this and the programmers begin to twitch and go into a furious rage yet they decided to come through with it, im a fan of morrowind and everquest but ill drop both of them to kick some ass on this. Strentgh affects how you pull out your weapons, capable of getting familys and killing the father of another family has an intersting twist the son grows up and vows revenge now tell me have you ever played a game with unlimited possibilities and neverending action, the enemies are just push overs like morrowind they actually use your mistakes to there advantage they hide in tall grass and jump you from all sides. 2 PLAYER HELL YAH so many parties of fable will be coming you just wait 90 of the population will be dreaming feeding thinking and living fable. If it isnt pushed back again ill be waiting at the store from dusk till dawn to get this one. The wait is unbearable i keep thinking about fable when i play other games and the games just arent fun anymore, so coming from an rpg addict peace out.
| For when the real world is too much. | | James Bovington from Hudderfield, England says (23/Nov/2003): | Ah, Fable, this, to me, sounds like one of the best, if not the best, game it is possible to play. The amount of things your able to do in this gigantic game is amazing, everything you touch, everyone you talk to affects how other characters think of you, its not enough that you can customize basically every aspect of your appearence, you can get tattoos and every battle scar you recieve stays with you throughout the game, but the good and evil aspect (although already used to some extent in the balders gate games)is the proverbial icing on the cake, and I like icing!
although noone has played Fable I already love it, the graphics look amazing considering the size and scale of the game, and the two player quest is a great touch, one can be good, one evil, the perfect balance, Yin and Yang.
I, unfortunatly, wont get to play it, but i know some one who will so ill set up my tent in his garden.
I shall sumerize in a handy word equation.
Fable=Pure gaming bliss wrapped in a small plastic box.
Viva le virtual reality!
| Fable is by far the only reason to even own an Xbox | | Robert Radley from New Hampshire, USA says (20/Sep/2004): | I got an Xbox almost a year ago when I saw a preview for Fable on the Lionhead website. I was in the store just a few days ago, saw it on the shelf and scooped it up. It is incredible. It seems that each action sways your alignment, much like in Black&White, not to mention that the Lightning spell is strangely familiar... actually a few spells carry over from the godly powers of Lionhead's other big title. The realism is striking, most RPGs you can walk through people's houses, break pots and barrels, and take what you like from strangers. You can't do that in Fable, well you can but you have to risk getting caught by the guards. But then on the other hand there are corrupt guards that can be bribed. It seems like they thought of everything, and it even lacks the seemingly trademark glitches that marred B&W. Much in the style of Everquest, Diablo, and other Roleplaying games it's rather addictive, but it is the only one that hooked me. If I had to sum the game up in one word: undescribable.
| fable is going to be the best game of all time now and forever... | | Niko from westlinn, oregon says (10/Oct/2003): | fable has become a big hit and its not even out yet. think of it this way in a normal game if you destroy your world you eather start over, reload, switch players, esc but in fable if you destroy your world completly you take you memory card and go to a friends house and load your character into there world as a completly new person.which comes in handy if your considered an ass in your world. i will probably be the first in line to buy the game the second it hits the shelvs.
plus in most games there is an invisible wall or some thing else to block you from getting far away from the action but not in this game. i have bin going to many web sites and seen many things on fable and the amount of work gone into this game is overwhelming. you can gem up items to make it more powerful i think i even read that there is a frying pan that you can jem up which is kind of weird but funny.
thats all i have to say so go buy that game now!!!!!!!!!!!!
| Pretty good, but not that good | | Rico from Tallahassee,FL says (26/Oct/2004): | I personally think the game was pretty good. The graphics were "off the rip!" You guys did a really good job with the english accents. The game overall ran well. But what gets me is that the levels should be more "realistic." What I mean by this is that I shouldn't be confined to a "cut-out" map. Don't get it twisted you guys did a great job, but the levels should be more massive; much like morrowind. I think a game like Fable would be greatly enjoyed with the ability "Hero" had like: lightning, fire ball, slow-time, bersrk, etc. on a much biggerscale/level. Also, I came to conclude that with such astounding graphics maybe you had to make a sacrifice: choosing between graphics and bigger levels such as in Morrowind. Overall the game rocks.
p.s.
FABLE 2
| It would be good if it didn't suck. | | JRED from Guelph, Ontario, Canada says (24/Sep/2004): | I played it, and beat this game with both good and evil within 3 days of its release. those 3 days were good, but what do you do after? you have the best armor, best weapons, and best spells maxed out, and no hard opponents left. just guards and balverines. 3 hits kill trolls now. wow. no challenge. not enough quests, yet so much potential. this game is very linear, much like StarWars: KOTOR, yet is only 15 hours long if stretched instead of 50 hours long for starwars. Marrowind will never be topped by this easy let-down of a game. more quests and interactive environments would have made this game perfect. you cant leave the paths, and with cheap health potions found everywhere, you could beat the Arena with a stick if prepared enough.
| Enter Fable. | | Sam from Minnesota USA. says (14/Jun/2005): | Fable, a great game! It has good graphics, though could be a bit longer, you can choose the dark path of evil, or the bright path of the good, either way, it will affect the reactions of those around you---and how you look, this game is great IMO, I like a lot of things about it, I recently bought it because people said it was GREAT and so I thought hey I am gonna buy it, I am happy I bought it, there is side quests, and interesting things, especially since there is a lot of alternative paths you can choose when your playing, this game you can be a Willpowerful Wizard, a Strong Brave Swordsman, or a Rogue Archer, you can find Demon Doors, and unlock special legendary items.
Remember, every action has it's own consequence.
| a whole new world!? | | Jamie MacMillan from Huddersfield, England says (19/Nov/2003): | I have heard so many things about Fable and if everybody heard what i heard, who wouldn't buy an x-box just for this superb looking game! I have been surfing the internet just looking for sites about Fable and i have seen many things about it, then i found this brilliant site where you can share your own opinion about Fable and it hasn't even come out yet. Back to the game at hand, it sounds like a whole new world, every flower you crush every foe you slay it will change the world forever! as if that wasn't cool enough you can choose your own clothes and weapons, whether you are good or evil and you can have a multiplayer with your friends in story mode. I have endless good things to say about this game!
| The best game ever!!!!! | | gamegal says (9/Mar/2005): | This is a one-of-a-kind game and is really really fun! It is quite quick to complete but not if you do all of the side quests and go get married and stuff like that! To be honest, if you're just gunna wizz through it then it's not really the game for you but if you love totally interactive settings and a storyline that changes everytime you play it, then this is the best game in the world!!!!
I really enjoyed it and was wondering if anyone knows if you can have kids with your wife?
Also, a little tip-if you commit a crime and get caught doing it then you will get a crime in that city. If you leave the city for a while then go back there will be no fine and no-one will be angry at you!
| Is It a hoax? | | Hoax from Nashville Tn says (29/Aug/2003): | I bought the xbox because of project ego now called Fable and Halo. They first anounced Project ego would be released March 2001 and here we are September 2003 with the release date of "winter 2004". How in the world can a release date be off by 3 years? Has anyone actually seen the game in action? I can't find a single artical that says they have seen it in action - only pictures and graphics. Can a game like the one they claim to have even be built on the xbox? I have KOTOR "which is awesome" but it gets choppy every now and then and the grapics on Fable look like it will blow KOTOR away.
So my question is this - was the game fable/ project ego a hoax just to sell xbox's?
| the best game i've played yet through the world of hereos | | Danny from cleethorpes great britian says (12/Jul/2005): | i think it is the best game yet that i've played because you get to be good or bad whatever you choose, but i think that when you become bad with horns on your head you should get special abilities such as death or convert, but when you become good you should be able to heal others and you should get a halo or angel wings same as when your bad you should get a tail and devil wings but i agree with others that there should be a fable 2 or an expansion were you get more quest, powers, armour, and weapons and you should be able to pick from male or female +when you become bad the bandits that are wild (not in twin blades camp) should not attack you unless you hit one of them.
| Not what the programmers said | | Matt from waterbury,ct USA says (21/Nov/2004): | I heard of this game online, and it was SUPPOSE to have every action change the world. What world???? In an hour i had already seen the whole world. I beat the game within 1 freaking day. Should have had more quests, side quest, and like they promised that every action changed the world. It was a good game with great graphics, but the reason i bought it was that it was suppose to be my own fable. Create my own game, that can never be the same twice. What happened to that???? Now if they created this game like final fantasy where there are more than one disc, and the story goes on with the ability to change it, and the environment, that would have been awesome.
| Great game, but not a 10 | | Janus from Oegstgeest in the Netherlands says (14/Dec/2004): | Hello, my name is Janus de bananus. Damn, this game is good. Some people say that it is not good that you cant move in all directions but it gives you a good clear view of the map of the whole game. The minus points are clearly the loading times, it takes too long but builds up the tention as well. But the most irritating thing is that you cant continue when youre done with the final battle. You get the awesome light sword but cant use it on enemies. The game is also too short and you cant see the sex scenes with lady Grey. But these minus points are nothing compared to the beautifull graphics, story, gameplay and athmosphere. Buy if you dont have it. BYE BYE
| An awsome ass kicking game!! | | Connor from Brisbane, Queensland, Australia says (26/Mar/2005): | I have finished the game twice. As Good and as Evil. If you do every Quest, you can make the most out of the game. I don't understand why other reviewers thought that this game is "Not what I expected" the game is one of the best xbox game I've ever played. If you rush through any game it will most of the time be the most crap game you've played. If you are evil, horns will grow out of your head and people will be scared of you. If good, a halo is on top of your head and people will be attracted to you. You can also be attracive when you're pure evil if you wear the right clothes. I hope others can enjoy the game in the same way as I did.
