Nice try |
| Maxx Factor from Fresno, CA USA says (26/Nov/2003): |
I've been playing this game for 4 months now and have evolved into a near unstoppable player and this is why: Madden 2004 is a nice attempt at a football game, and like the others before it, falls short at creating a realistic football experience. Sports is a hard thing to duplicate. It's impossible at this time to write limited computer code that simulates human response. There's too many "auto" plays. The run defense is horrible.
Madden has made "uber" players that defy realism. Michael Vick is rediculous. You can litteraly run the ball every down with some running backs the whole game and you can't stop them. Some play books include indefensible quick pass plays that drive you crazy. Uber wide receivers catch passes in tripple coverage (a quarterback wouldn't even throw that ball in real life, that's how unlikely it is).
The defensive play book is weak. Why are you limited as to what defenses you run? For instance, if you pick a 46 defense, you will lose important plays out of your 4-3 defense, nickel etc. There's no way to have the right play for every situation like a real NFL team would bring to a game. Do you really picture Bill Parcells telling his defensive coordinator "hey we need a play to guard the flats", and the DC saying "oops, sorry didn't bring that one today, touch luck". No.
Offensive playmaker is unfair. There is no equalizer for it on defense. For instance, Vick can run around for 20 seconds (he's that fast) and bring a guy in that was 50 yards down field toward him and he's uncovered every time. There's nothing you can do but send a blitz and hope he doesn't see it (which he just runs from that too).
If you're looking for an unrealistic "arcade" football expereince this is for you. However, if you are educated in football schemes do not play this game because you won't be able to apply football logic.
I gave it a 5 for pretty graphics and cool sound. Other than that I have no use for it.

MADDEN FOOTBALL IS MADDEN FOOTBALL, DON'T COMPLAIN BECAUSE THE COMPUTER GETS TIRED OF LOOSING, IT WANTS TO WIN TO, WHY SHOULD YOU WIN EVERY SINGLE GAME?? |
| THE GRIGGUL8R from JACKSONVILLE, NC USA says (30/Jan/2004): |
Madden 04 is awesome of course, but with its greatness comes headaches. I have read about people complaining about the Playmaker controls on offense being unfair, come on control your defense yourself, don't be scared to do bad, with practice you will be unstopable, no matter what play they audible to.
I have read about people saying that it is not fair on All Madden against the computer, if you audible yourself and take the time to learn them and use your audible's you can fool the computer, but would a real team be fooled everytime, would they really win every game???? No they would not, it does not take perfection to win a Super Bowl, but it does take planning.
Some have complained about the defensive plays sucking, I have discovered you can stop anything by using Cover 2. Even big ol' Mike Vick, I know how to use him and how to stop him, hit him enough and he will go out of the game. Using Cover 2 double qb spy, play it tight by bringing your secondary in and shift both lines outward. If you have to replace one of your down linemen with the fastest player on your team, he don't have to be strong, because he will hardly ever get blocked, especially if you know your apponent is going to scramble with them.
Keep in mind, explore all aspects of the VIDEO GAME, not the game on the television. If you want a realistic game, play evenly matched teams, and acctually put feild posistion factor in. PUNT THE BALL.
From the man who has never lost a madden tournament, but has lost before...peace

Best Madden Ever! |
| boob from usa says (23/Sep/2003): |
Madden is flat out the best football game out. The comparisons to Sega's 2K series and XBOX's Fever titles is ridiculous. Madden is a football dynasty. People say 2K's hits are better, no there is nothing good about plays where you go for a catch and before you get there its already decided what and how everything will happen. Sega makes good sports games but they need to leave the football department to the pros. Madden is the true football players dream you can create on the fly no pocket is even needed. You dont have to worry about your blocker picking up the wrong guy in the open field or your reciever not being where you want him. You have controll with the play maker controll. On defense if you thought run but your opponent is gonna pass you dont have to worry. You can commit to the run or pass after the play without time eating audibles. you can cheat your safetys to help on mismatches all over the field. You can switch the direction of a running play without letting anyone know it. Its great. If you hate the high prices at games and know how much you would pay for a hot dog or beer, you can change it to your liking with the new owner mode. You can do more than sign players and a head coach how about every position in the coaching staff you can do it all. Madden is the king in football all other titles should give up. Madden is the best and wont stop gettin better.

Unrealistic ...But I still play it everyday! |
| Shan from wheaton says (7/Jan/2004): |
Madden 2004 will make you laugh cry and brake two controllers like I have.
Trying to play against the computer in All Madden mode is a joke. I don't care what offensisive play you call, they (meaning computer) is always in the perfect defense to stop it, I dont care what defense you call, the computer will audible to the perfect play to beat it. And lo and behold if you happen to get a lead, all of a sudden you start throwing pics and funbling like crazy, but not the computer. You can only beat the computer in All Madden mode if the computer lets you. I can go on, like all of a sudden my offensive line stops blocking, and incredible one hand interseptions! Cone on. I hope the people at E.A. sports will correct problems like this. Don't get me wrong I have beaten the computer in All Madden mode, but only twice out of about 150 tries.
If I can give somebody a tip when playing. Play with the Bears, for some reason they are the best all around team in the game. Brain Urlacher has unreal speed and will stop most running plays and intercept any pass thrown in his direction, and the secondary plays well also. And on Defense A-Train takes about three guys to bring down and Kordell stweart is the second fastest running Quarterback in the game behind Vick. And then if that's not enough Marty Booker pretty much cathes everything! Happy Playing

Didnt improve much... Stuck Players Galore! |
| Samwise from Madison WI says (2/Oct/2003): |
This game I believe is definetely overrated in that the gameplay is definetely offense favored like any other EA game. Also the playmaker passing is a bad idea... As a QB can you talk to a receiver that is 30 yards down field while 3 DE's are hunting you down. If this was eliminated then Vick wouldnt look like GOD anymore. Also when you come with blitzes guys just get stuck in the middle of the line. I am sorry but when Kendrell Bell blitzes he doesnt just run into a wall of O-Lineman... HE BLOWS BY THEM!!! The game has major flaws such as this which can be considered a cheat:
Pick a play in singleback normal or Shotgun 2Rb 3wr that involves a straight route with any receiver. Then audible into a fake punt (preferrably with a mobile Qb) Otherwise just slide with Qb immediately and press triangle to do the same play and just chuck it up to the WR running the straight route because all the defenders come charging in including the corners and safeties.
As far as the graphics goes they are the same as they always have been!
Madden is still annoying as hell and screws you over on his ask Madden option. The only new addition to the sound is the 18 track mix of songs which gets old after a few times listening to it.
I think Madden needs to take a major step up next year before the competition takes the big step and blows them away.
|
Madden 2004 is the exact same as it's previous 3 installments! |
| Brent from Milwauke, Wisconsin says (16/Apr/2004): |
Let's face it... in 1995 we had Madden defeated once by sega sports NFL 95. Since then.... it had four years of number one rated football. Those were good years for madden, and then Sega comes out with the NFL 2k series. Little following at first... but still rated better than madden for the past 4 years on every reviewing site. Finally, madden has gotten overtaken and is finally being outsold... and with good reason, the game hasn't changed in years.
Graphics: 4/10
Let's not lie to ourselves... they could be worse... but this is the XBOX version we're talking about... and hands down... it doesn't do what the XBOX is capable of doing graphically... all it is, is the exact same gritty game for the PS2.
Sound: 1/10
Sorry... but listening to Madden talk has gotten old by now... his prime years are over
Control: 7/10
The control was not all that bad... with the new playmaker features make it tolerable...
Replayability: 8/10
Franchise mode makes this one playable for a long time to come.
Overall: 4/10
With two other football games out there now outranking madden (ESPN NFL Football and Fever 2005)... you have to believe Madden's run at the top is finally tumbling...

ITS A TRUE GAMERS GAME |
| Erik from Minnesota says (29/Jun/2004): |
Most of the reveiws here are extremly DUMB and child like. Madden isn't for little kids that arnt mature enough to fully appretiate Maddens amazing qualitys. Some of you deslike the announcers John Madden(who the game is named after) and Al Michals if you dont like these anouncers then you must be crazy because these announcers are possibly the greatest of all time.(Just like at there history) Next the gameplay wich is by far the best. You need actual football intelligence to completly understand its extremly realistic gameplay(thats why some of you dont like it).Its graphics seem to always be better than the rest of that years games. People have to realize that its not easy to creat realistic grass, faces, stadiums, jerseys, helmets, and actions. Yet EA still makes them better and better every year. The sound is about 95% realistic because 5% of things said on a football feild arnt allowed in E rated games more like T rated. So if you enjoy realistic games Madden IS for you. However if you Dont care about quality and just like simple games where 5 year olds can win than get a different game like HALO

Calm ourselves people. |
| A gamer from Chico, CA says (13/Nov/2004): |
its a freakin' game, don't take it so seriously. Everybody is compplaining about how unrealistic the players are. "Oh, Michale Vick is unstoppable". Who cares, how would you like to play a game with every person not able to catch, run or throw, it would just be boring. Its neccesary to make some over the players better to make the game more exciting.
And, if you are complaining about the graphics, how about you make a football game with better graphics. Then you can whine about how bad these graphics are.
I loved this game, and i can't wait to get 2005. 2004 is the best football game ive played by far, because, there are so many different modes to choose from, francjhise makes this game replayable over and over again. Online play is a great way to communicate with other players, and learn new strategy, (ecspacially if you have a headset),and play now mode is really fun when you are just playing with a friend.
GRAPHICS:10
GAMEPLAY:10
ONLINE PLAY:10
OVERALL:10
*The ONLY thing i dislike about this game is John Madden's commentary every play. It is fun making fun of him though . =D

this game is awesome and you would have to agree |
| Marshall from Boring,OR. says (30/Sep/2003): |
I have only had this game for a short time but it is awesome.there are new things that you can do like playmaker control and owner mode.at first I was not very psyched about football games but now I really like playing this game and thats a exmple of how good this game is.also me and my big bro. really like the songs played during the menu.the game also has good graphics and makes the players and coaches look real.I also thought that playmaker was a really good idea to put in this great game.and not once I thought the gameplay was unfair gliched or just plain stupid. man I am running out of words to tell you people how good a game this is but there are many good things about this game but I will try to write everything I can think of.this game also works on xbox live so you can plan and play together in different places whitch is very cool.my favorite team is the 49ers.my two favorite guys are owens and garcia and johnsons ok. and thats all I have to say.buh-bye yall

I Have Seen True Happiness, It's Called Playmaker! |
| Sal Lagonia from Yorktown, New York. USA says (6/Oct/2003): |
The Playmaker feature on Madden '04 is a feature all football games should have. I've always wanted to lead recievers, direct blockers and direct my entire defense with a single button.
Owner mode is incredable. You have no idea how much fun it is to change your consession prices until you've done it. What about your ability to MOVE YOUR FRANCHISE?!?! I started as owner of the Panthers and hated my fairweather fans, so I moved up north to Washington, designing my own stadium, making the city pay half and even leased seating to local corperations! I even was able to hire Vinny Testeverde as my head coach a few years in!
The only thing this game is missing is a Hall of Fame. You go through some impressive seasons with some of your players, and you expect them to be inducted, then nothing.
When all is said and done though, this is by far the greatest football game I have ever played. Thank you Jon and EA sports for this wonderfull work of art.

Stupid Cheezers |
| Good Player from Fooseball, USA says (11/Jan/2004): |
I'll give it to Madden, it's fun. Fun against people that play the "right way"... whatever that is. Its fun playing people online that you don't know. But its not fun when you challenge a high ranked player but find out he's a lame that uses every glitch on the game and onside kicks perfectly every single time. The whole point of a ranking system is to show you who are the better players, not who knows more glitches and cheats. This game is the best because you can't do anything to even get close to touching the ball... right? Whats the point of playing if you're gonna cheat? *Shrugs* Some people just gay like that.
Run defence sucks... Pass defence sucks... DBs can't catch, they'd rather let the ball hit em in the head... The Vick Show is fast but jesus, he can run for 25 yards a play if he gets around your Defensive end... yadda yadda. Good game right?
Whatever..

Awesome... |
| Thomas from Kalispell, USA says (16/Aug/2003): |
This game is so awesome... I messed around with all the options and stuff for like 40 minutes before I even got into a game, and i was already in love.. Gameplay is awesome, owner mode is awesome, training camp is awesome... Only downfall for this game (From my point of view) is the commentary, but that is my least favorite part of all Madden games.. When you play 2004 you will hear some exact lines that you heard in madden 2002! When I got NCAA football 2004, the commentary was much better than 2003, and I was optimistic that madden would do the same. But they didn't, you still get to listen to Jon point out the COMPLETELY obvious, and they dont have many saying for when someone reaches a milestone, like ncaa fb 2004 did.
All around this is a GREAT game.. And I recommend it to everyone, this is a must have for any football fans!

good game, but could use some improvement |
| tyork from jacksonville florida bangum usa says (20/Jan/2004): |
it's the little things on the game that don't make sense to me like why is there certain players that no matter what you do you can't stop them? when you modify your teams uniform u can't have the teams logo on the helmet.why when u pick your defense if you use the 4-3 for example ther is no 3-4 formations so your stuck on plays where the 3-4 would be better.the kick metter on all madden goes way to fast on kickoffs. when you create a player if you have a last name that is different they don't say it .when you create a team if you use a smaller towns name it will only say the home team or the visiting team and if you don't use the a.i. on all madden u most likely lose its like the cpu is all madden but your rookie even if u play the worst team on the game. just a few thins i think should be changed for 05

Best Game Ever with a few Faults |
| Madden Fan from Defiance, Ohio says (24/Nov/2003): |
Madden is awesome, but there are a few faults. I love the new owner mode and playmaker additions. However, the game has one major problem. I am about four years into my franchise and I have two cornerbacks with an overall rating above 90. However, they have trouble stopping the pass. My defense allows about 50 yards a game on the ground, but they are ranked 32 overall because I give up about 350 passing yards a game. Is there any way to stop the opposing team's passing offense? I also import players from NCAA Football, but they have no names. You can edit their information and add names, but then their personal data (Year drafted, etc) gets screwed up. Is there any way to fix this?
|
Why do you play? |
| J-rome from Santa Fe, NM, USA says (20/Jun/2004): |
most other football games are designed so you can compete no matter how bad u suck. madden has no computer assistance and the strategic parts are more important than anything. if you watch football alot and play football games alot, madden is THE closest to the real thing. ESPN, Fever, NFL2k and most other football games are more arcade style to me. Madden is never fun for my cousins and friends cuz they have no chance of winning. In, madden you have to actually pay attention to the defense you pick and where U're personal is positioned. Most other games u win by using the same 5 or 6 plays everytime. and All Madden i a bitch to beat unless u're team is better than the rest.
|
madden does ot again!!!!! |
| matt from Scranton USA says (21/Feb/2004): |
this game is by far the best game i have ever played with the new owner mode and playmaker control it let's you have retired players be part of your coaching staff this game also has great detail when you're playing against the computer, announcers also say the names of created teams too. this game has great graphic and good music. i give this game an overall perfect 10 for all of these new features this game is great to play all year long no matter what sport season it is
this game is the best xbox game there is out today it is far better than HALO or any other game you might like
so youhave to ask yourself one question how does madden make these great gamesevery year
|
pretty good |
| Chris from Bakersfield, California says (20/Jan/2004): |
well madden has improved from last year the only problem with the game is that madden and Jhon Madden and AL Michals are the anouncers. other than that the game is really good i love the owner mode it makes you feel that you are in charge of the team and it prevants you from having those dream teams that are only possible in your dreams. I also love the challenges on line it is fun to beat people you dont know exept for those people that like to cheat that use onside kicks perfectly so that they get the ball every time and the only way to beat them is to intercept them every time. but other than the cheaters and the anouncers the game is the best football game out.
|
its better but u expect that |
| MNman from St.Paul, minnesota US of A says (30/Nov/2003): |
it is a better game but u would expect that by now it could be a lot better so many things like defense and how when u play the computer and they r in the 2 minute drill and they score every time with a 80 yard drive in 45 seconds with a no huttle offense u cant stop it but next year it will be even better (i hope) even the owner mode needs some touches but other then that it is a good game to play
the play maker control is very good except for gamecube cause when u run and try to use the playmaker control ur too busy holding on the A button for ur turbo and cant reach the control stick so it is a good game but if u buy it id buy it for PS2
|
It was Aight |
| Hype from Small Town U No Shepherd, Texas USA says (2/Jan/2004): |
Aight see in this game It got a little better than 2003 The Owner Mode and as you can see it took the changing the logo color from NCAA and the playmaker I like it, But What it really needs to do is bring the legends back because that was one of the tight parts of 2002,and 2003 like my man Barry Sanders and John Elway, and in this game and 2003 I like the way theres the way to export the players from NCAA But what they should do is when you Create - a - Player You start him from Scratch not from all 99.But U No This was a aight game graphics getting better O yeah this game in Training Mode needs more Training Abilities U No I'm Out.
