Mitch from Atlanta, GA USA says (21/Apr/2004):
Codemasters knows racing games. Period. They have a relatively solid past with the genre beginning with the old TOCA and Colin McRae games on PS1, but their latest outing, TOCA Race Driver 2, seems to be missing something. The last TOCA game, called Pro Race Driver in the States, was an exremely capable, enjoyable game that was marginally story-driven. The player followed the career of Ryan McKane as he worked his way up the Pro Racing ladder to stardom. TOCA 2 follows the same formula, but this time there is no Ryan McKane. All the story takes place in a first-person perspective as though it's actually you living it out. In a way I sort of miss the old way the story was set up, but that's not the real problem, though. The game just doesn't have the "fun factor" that games like PGR 2 have, and Codemasters has limited the accessability of the multiplayer modes. The previous game allowed for four-player split screen multiplayer, which my friends and I played a lot. The new game offers only a two player split screen mode, which wasn't too bad when I heard that you could use the system link function. As it turns out, you can only have one player per console during system link play. I just don't get why you can slipt the screen for two people on regular multiplayer mode but not during system link mode. This was the biggest let down for me because I was such a fan of the original's multiplayer game. The graphics are stellar and the game plays very well, too. There aren'y many development teams who can make a better racing physics engine than Codemasters. Cars all take damage in real time, and as a result there are some times when your car will be completely undriveable. The game is definitely solid, but I just miss having a more comprehensive multiplayer mode. It was the original's main selling point for me, so this game is an excellent career mode experience, but that's about it. If you like to play alone then buy this game. If you're a multiplayer racing freak, you might want to hold off on this one.
